annabeth instead of saying she had to work twice as hard because she was blonde, should have said she had to work twice as hard because she was a woman.

i know it's pretty obvious because it's something that has always happened and happens every day, but let me dig deeper.

annabeth should have shown more about her annoyance with percy taking all the credit for things. water boy comes in one day out nowhere, does two things and j like that he's the best thing in camp and everyone loves him. what about annabeth? annabeth who has been in that camp her whole life? annabeth who has done everything she can to get noticed?

percy is barely in camp from what is said in the books, and yet he’s always the topic of the moment. the only time annabeth has shown her annoyance towards this, is in tlo when he tells her that while she has been preparing the whole camp for war he decided to spend the vacations with rachel.

and when she is in moa with arachne, literally a monster born of envy, it was time to release all that rage and injustice she had experienced. annabeth had to work twice as hard to be recognized half as hard as percy was recognized. she knew she deserved more credit for all she had done.

I also think the “twice as hard, half as far” mentality could’ve hit harder if Annabeth was a WOC. Like...Percy is a white guy, charismatic, friendly, etc. Annabeth is prickly, doesn’t trust easily, and works tirelessly for the position she wants.

And the ambition that grows, stoked by years of working with no payoff (she’s never been sent on a quest despite her clear skills in combat, for example), that rage and injustice released in a single cathartic moment as OP discussed...

As a WOC myself...this all sounds very much like a WOC experience.
