Harry stared down at the blanket blankly, chewing on his bottom lip as he tried to comb through his memory for how to swaddle the whimpering baby below him. The nurse had shown him, but her experienced hands had been too fast for his sleep-deprived brain and adrenaline-fueled heart to keep up with. Getting lost between the folding and tucking motions. It all looked much more complicated than he was sure it was meant to be. He’d been feeling confident until now. Everything seemed so much easier and more relaxed in the hospital, where there was an abundance of nurses or midwives at the ready in case either of you got overwhelmed or were unsure of how to properly do something.

Now, you were on your own. No help was just across the hall anymore. Suddenly, she looked so much more fragile. Her skin looked more delicate, her limbs breakable liked painted china, and he found himself watching her chest go up and down, making sure the movements were rhythmic, and questioning whether everything she did was supposed to be. Every snuffling breath, the way she smacked her lips together, the pitch of her cry. Was her breathing supposed to be like that? Was she too cold? What if she stopped breathing? Did that mean she was hungry? Was her head supported enough when he held her?

She’d been home a whopping total of eight hours, and already, he felt utterly lost, despite the copious amounts of help and tips and tricks you’d both received prior to being discharged. But he’d never experienced nerves like it. He’d sang in front of thousands, stood in front of crowds with shaking hands, while willing himself not to be sick from the pulsing nerves. But this, this felt like he’d been handed this squirming little bundle, wished well and sent off to navigate some undiscovered territory that was his tiny daughter.
