hello hello!

you can call me ‘Ro’, or ‘boots’, or whatever you’d like. i don’t care about that - but i will be somewhat firm on my pronouns, though: they/them/it - just gender neutral terminology all-round!

i'm usually radio silent, but when i do post, i ramble a lot! so prepare thyself for that, i guess

other than that, there’s not much else to add:

hell yeah i do! i reckon Theo's foil would be Damien! and seeing as this is its own post i'll go further into detail than the last time-

Damien had a plan for his life. he knew exactly what he wanted to do, and how he intended to get there, often pushing the far limits of his academic and magical capacity just to stick the landing. Damien works harder than almost anyone else, and fights hard for the results he wants to see - in every subject.

his relationships and personal life took a backseat, something to focus on later. he was reserved, prickly. he didn't welcome anyone in (tsundere ass). it took a while for him to soften, and to realise that he couldn't only focus on those long-term plans - the ones he laid out so many years ahead of him.

but! one of the few personal things - along with his powers - that he was immediately willing to mention to 'Freelancer' was his mother. he talked about her achievements despite the discrimination she faced as a humanborn, how powerful she is. he's proud of her, and her story.

on the flipside:

Theo doesn't have a career focus. he's "the least organised person you'll ever meet". he knows somewhat what area he wants to go into after education, but it's a personal interest of his, "his thing" compared to everything else he feels far less proficient in. and yet, he doesn't seem too worried about changing that! he's just focusing on his passion: a club.

he's social, he's peppy, he's open and honest - almost clunkily so with how much he shares with 'Dreamer' upon first meeting them - but he seems pretty emotionally literate and intelligent. he's patient, even when Corvus makes him slightly overwhelmed (with so many personal questions). he keeps his cool.

but Theo doesn't really want to talk about his family. it's something complicated. specific. he leaves it at that. his family (and his powers) are some of the few things he doesn't want to openly talk about.

in short:

Damien is a reserved tsundere academic, keeping his head down and working - until he gets fired up. that's when he'll let out his frustration and rant about all the injustices he sees.

Theo is a bubbly and peppy social butterfly, happy to talk and make friends - but quietens down and dodges the subject when it gets to a personal sore spot.

how would your morality change if suddenly you found yourself taken away from everything you knew and loved, transported to an unknown place you have zero connection with, and surrounded by people you don't know, can't trust, and actively have bad experiences with immediately?

and then come to find out it's actually been long enough that everyone you knew in your past (with one exception) is long dead - scratch that, your planet is dead! entirely gone - and there's no hope of you ever going back to the way things were.

everything you'd ever done up to that point - meaningless. forgotten. everything you are- who cares? you are a stranger in this world, and everyone is going to treat you that way.

i know i'd certainly struggle.

and holy fuck i don't think karmor gets enough credit for being as accepting as he has been lmao. first impressions with the crew? hipswitch almost gives him up for a bounty. he's simultaneously threatened and talked down to by albus on a nigh-constant basis. let's not even get into the whole needle situation because damn, doc would not get a second chance with me if i'd been in that room. oh, it's allergy season?? what a wild excuse please try harder to keep your weirdo in line, thanks /j /nsrs

why should karmor care about the consequences of his actions when he has no emotional ties to anything anymore? why should he try to be 'good' when everything else is trying to kill him? if he's out there taking the moral high ground amongst bounty hunters and mad scientists and criminals, then isn't he just giving everyone else an easy target?

in a world where no one knows who you are, should you still try to be good?

it's a super interesting question to me. and i think - based on what we've heard, karmor is still trying to be good. he cares. he gets albus free drinks at the bar (plus karmor listens to his advice, trains, and does what he can to help out and pull his weight), he held hipswitch's hand when he needed the emotional support, he's opening up to doc, and even though he's certainly wary of attila (rightfully so) he hasn't written him off yet! he saved his life!

yes, karmor fucks up from time to time (who doesn't) and in a time and place so unfamiliar, who can blame him? he's learning this world at the same rate we the audience are. 'course he's going to do some dumb shit, try out the new powers, see what rules he can bend before breaking them, yada yada. (he is also likely grieving the loss of an entire planet and his previous life on it so i think we can give him some emotional wiggle room lmao)

but i think he's trying to be good where he can be. and right now, i think that's enough.

Freelancer and Dreamer! A 'jack of all trades' who was suddenly thrown into the magical world and at first tried to avoid/ignore it at all costs, vs the niche specialist who was surrounded by magic their whole life and desperately wanted to be magical themselves, doing anything to get it...

Gavin and Corvus! the demon who hid behind the perceived social norm of ‘what he’s meant to be’, casually flirting and striking up conversations without ever exploring the depth of his own interests, vs the demon who struggles to understand common social cues and what he’s 'meant to do' in a situation, but has a profound special interest which he will openly talk about for as long as you'll let him (woo rollercoasters!!)

Lasko and Lincoln, the airhead and the weight of the world! Fast and rambling and outwardly anxious, who knows he wants to prove himself and became fully certified before going back to further develop his naturally strong points in magic, vs the slow, calm student who isn’t sure if he can be more than his specialty… Yet.

spoilers for ‘sight of a seer’ since it came out just earlier yada yada but-

holy hell he’s talking about blake. he’s talking about blake to be clear: not directly, obviously morgan doesn’t know blake (and even if he does that’s not what i mean, not literally) but erik, indirectly, is talking about blake.

morgan’s talking about how the sodality, and seers themselves often fall into the trap of thinking that they know it all exactly as it’ll happen, that if they just ‘run all the numbers’ they can figure out exactly how it’s going to go.

he’s talking about blake. blake has run ‘bestie’’s death through his mind so many times and changed different calculations and looked through alternate paths (i’m too excited and exhausted right now to grab the exact quotes of this but blake said it himself that ‘the point never changes, the death never changes’ to paraphrase a whole lot. anyway.)

but he doesn’t know that. not for certain. it’s not confirmed, it’s just a prediction. and as morgan says, the further and further you run the numbers, the more and more alternate paths and choices and decisions you look through, the more inaccurate that prediction becomes. “something in the picture is going to be off”.

seers are only so powerful, and that ability has limits. no prediction is 100% accurate, because it can’t be. there is no ‘known outcome’.

i mean no wonder blake is actively in a “tailspin” to borrow morgan’s words. that stubborn madman wouldn’t know humility if it hit him in the face. he believes his powers are absolute. when ‘bestie’ kissed him, he literally could not comprehend how that could have happened without him seeing it beforehand.

and yes i know this is all obvious stuff but i’m excited and needed a place to yap and woooooo i’m so happy that morgan got another video

is it just because the magic only ever damages/backfires on the person using it? or was the presence of D’Deridahn causing all the harm from within, since he was the one guiding Blake’s magic to get them there? or is Bestie just uniquely better equipped to handle that kind of magic, in a way that Blake’s body struggles to cope with?

if Bestie is some kind of magic user (specific or otherwise), did they manage to do something that affected the trajectory/outcome? did their magic do something? was it on purpose?

I'm going insane and need answers now. Do we have an accurate power-scaling system for vampires? The system really confuses me and my brain has smelt a paradox.

So Vincent is stronger than Alexis, despite her being older than him, because William was younger when he turned her. So 'power' (which I'm assuming means just physical strength/ general prowess) is primarily determined by your maker's age.

But this doesn't really make sense to me, because if William is a power proxy, then that means that vampiric lineages progressively get weaker every generation, regardless of their age. (To visualise: if vampire A is 1000 and turns vampire B when A is 30, then turns vampire C 700 years later, would B or C be stronger, given C is still a fledgling and B is already an old blood of their own right?).

This system only works if old vampires have progeny extremely rarely, since this constant reproduction dilutes any 'old blood' power in the bloodline. It creates a degradation curve, since it's unlikely most makers will wait as long as William did to create them (he's also explicitly stated to be an outlier in this). Unless a vampire waits until they were older than their maker was when they made them to make their own progeny, net power is lost each generation.

Look at the vampires in canon, and how young they have their progeny. It leaves age as a bit of a non-factor, if everything is already biologically determined. How does age factor into power at all then? Why does it matter? It creates a paradox where either the system must be forced to decouple biological inheritance from static power or yield to account for time-dependent power scaling.

Also what does 'Old Blood' even mean, given both Quinn and William have been described as such? Is it your own age? Your maker's? Both? Is it a cultural term or a biological fact? Darlin' and Quinn seemed fairly matched for power, yet both Quinn and William share the same label that's meant to signify a noticeable power differential. It's made pretty clear neither Darlin' nor Quinn can beat William in a fight, at least conventionally, so it can't be used as a reliable indicator of strength.

If it's biological, William and Quinn should exist in the same tier of power, which they don't. If it's a reputation signifier, why is it used in contexts that power is discussed? If it's both, we need it more clearly defined to avoid this confusion, no?

I suppose I just don't like the idea that vampires are shuffled into this deterministic caste system where ascension is impossible unless you chance in an exalted bloodline at the right time. It undermines agency and ambition amongst the vampires, and makes the fact a near constantly-invoked ONE YEAR OLD VAMPIRE in William Solaire killing his maker absolutely impossible without some extremely convoluted means. Now I personally think this was done just so Alexis would be weaker than Vincent, but if somebody wants to clear this up for me, I would very much appreciate it lol.

such a paradoxical and confusing (and kinda fucked up) nature sort of ties into the whole 'vampires are A'Xerahn's folly' lore tidbit imo lmao i mean, one could try to argue how it almost makes sense that they deteriorate and become increasingly unbalanced as time goes on - because they weren't meant to gain power / become stronger through lineage, they were just meant to exist as these experimental, subservient creatures to replace daemons for the sovereigns (which did not work, and thus they were given up on almost immediately and left to "ravage the land-born" and live out their screwed up lives among the rest of humanity). I kinda like that concept, but it is admittedly just me looking at the wider historical implications of their origins and shoving that knowledge onto vamps as a blanket excuse as to why they don't really make sense in the long run. maybe Erik didn't think that far ahead, maybe he did and the system is truly just that unfair, maybe this is a case of unreliable narrators (have the houses ever actually tested vampiric strength across the years, across generations, or are they working on assumptions themselves?) (who knows? only Erik, i suppose)
