Personal Growth

I was today years old when I realized that sometimes a shitty impulse can be a sign of personal growth.

I read a quick news bite this morning about the tornados that ripped through central Tennessee, and as usual, my first reaction was a general quick prayer for the people who may have lost life and property. It’s a human reaction.

My second thought was that I actually know people in Tennessee. My godawful ex’s racist parents live near that area. And it crossed my mind that, in spite of the fact that he treated me poorly and they despised me, the Me of ten years ago, would have texted or called him to make sure everyone was all right. Because that was the “nice” thing. The “right” thing.

But the Me of this morning realized that I don’t have to do a nice thing, especially for these people. That’s a human reaction, too!

I honestly don’t care one way or another if their little Fortress of Supremacy withstood the ravages of nature or if it blew away to Oz with them in it. I have less than no desire to be in contact with the guy again, and I hadn’t given him a sustained thought in years before “Nashville” popped up on my news feed.

And blessed be...I don't HAVE to! I can deprogram myself from all the useless crap about what’s nice and save my emotion and time for people in my life that matter and mean something to me. I can prune dead limbs of connection in my life and let the lively, interesting ones bloom from the rush of extra energy I have to put into helping them grow.

If only real cooking was this easy!
