god i love romances so much, and i love how there’s a steam heat rating as the genre-specific vernacular to describe just how much sexual content we can expect.

so words like: “ PLEASE BE ADVISED – Steam Level – Very Hot!” are basically… dare i say… the publishing world’s version of the old, outdated fic use of ‘lemon.’

I also love how romance readers will tend to read by trope. Like, we’ll go “I’m in the mood for a rivals to lovers story with a dash of bed sharing” and generally be able to find a book that suits what we’re looking for.

A lot like…fanfic.

Seriously I think there should be more overlap between the fanfic world and the romance novel world.

There SHOULD be. Tropes are celebrated and so constantly used in romance that we expect them, we want them, we celebrate hundreds of books who use them. And fanfics do the very same!

Slowborn? Enemies to friends to lovers? Just plain ol’ friends to lovers? Fake marriage? PINING FROM AFAR FOR YEARS AND MEETING AGAIN BY PURE LUCK AND FATED CIRCUMSTANCE?

SOULMATES?

Even AUs are a common element between fanfic and romance–and novels in general, but let’s stick with romances here. What fic uses as AUs is often used in romance as literary themes/parallels/allusions, or flat out retellings/reimaginings. Look at all the Beauty and the Beast-esque books that exist in the romance genre: they’re just BatB AUs with OCs.

It’s staggering to me that like, tennish or so years ago, shipping, shippy fic, and the like were so maligned in fannish circles because ew romance, the REAL adults talked about HOW CANON AND TRUE AND REAL SOMETHING WAS blah blah. Something has most definitely shifted in fandom spaces, especially with fan creations, in the past decade, leaning heavily in favor of romances, with the wonderfully emerging recent trend of people supporting, celebrating, and shipping OCs with canon characters. That shit was unthinkable in the mid 2000s–much like how romance readers and writers still have to defend their genre against bullshit “”””criticism”””” and willful misunderstandings.

Which, again, just goes back to what you said: there should be more overlap between fic and romances, because they already intersect.
