I LOVE the repetition of this verse with the changes. I think it's some of my favourite lyrics of the album because it's so simple but relatable. He uses a simple object to bring up the image of the break up (walking out the door) and then uses that word again in the moment (starin' at the door) and conjuring the image of absence (you're not here anymore). You're not here anymore and you will never be here again. All of this from a stupid pair of SHOES he's insane. (And if I say: 'And all that's left of us is a cupboard full of clothes').

The high notes in Silver Tongues come in these bolded lyrics (1:23 here):

“We stand up tall and beat our chests/ we say some things that we’ll regret.”

They are an A4, same high note we hear on Bigger Than Me. You can see the other high notes in Louis’ repertoire in this post.

Like most of Louis’ high notes in this range, he sings them in a chest voice, not falsetto. They are in a tenor’s range, but require some good breath support to reach. In recordings, Louis seems to be able to reach A4 and B4 consistently and effortlessly. I hear the notes after the second high A4 (“things that we’ll regret”) in Silver Tongues as briefly flat— which means that the song’s engineer didn’t autotune Louis perfectly (whether by choice or by accident). It gives the track a more spontaneous / livelier sound.

The same A4 in Bigger Than Me (the chorus) is much more challenging to sing and more sustained, since he sings it for much of the song. Consequently, Louis has taken it down 1/2 step in live performances, singing a G#4. He nails this note in live performances easily.

For Walls studio recording, Louis has sung higher falsettos, but his 1D chest voice often went to B4, even live. I don’t think he tries to reach this note live in concert anymore, and he doesn’t often do a falsetto either.

For the belted voice, however, Louis still has a brilliant, breathtaking tone. It isn’t as crystal clean and pure as it used to be— smoking, alcohol, and age have added a raspy, gruff edge. But his voice is uniquely his, with higher harmonics than most tenors so that it sounds almost like an alto voice.
