so i'm rewatching vendetta and i really like how the opening scenes hold leon and chris up as like... literally opposite sides of the same coin.

like, there's leon, alone in the morgue, dealing with the loss of his entire team. and then they come back – literally come back to life – to remind him that he's failed them. and maybe it's for the first time he's experiencing that, maybe it's not. but that doesn't matter – it's proof that he's better off working alone, just as he always has. right?

and then there's chris, surrounded by a group of soldiers who don't – can't – understand him or how he feels. people seeing him as a hero but not fully understanding the weight of what it takes to get there. and then he loses them all, again. but he's not in a position to go it alone so it's an endless cycle of losing people. and that's his normal. his self-assigned duty.

and that's why leon lashes out so much at the bar – not because chris doesn't get it, or that he doesn't care. it's because he's the only person who does understand, and yet he stands there in uniform, ready to go back out there and risk it all once again. accepting it as if it's his fate. and leon doesn't want

it's what makes the ending – leon's how much longer can we keep going like this – chris' joking i don't plan that far ahead – so tragic. leon wants to believe they can be free from that life. but chris can't even allow himself to imagine it.
