For Spencer West, nothing is impossible. Or as he would put it: everything is possible.

Nearly all of the 31-year-old American’s life has proven the doctors wrong. When they amputated both of his legs right below the pelvis when he was 5, they warned that he would never be a functioning member of society. But West has led not only led a life that is remarkably normal compared to his doctors’ prognosis – he has accomplished feats that, by any measure, are extraordinary.

Nothing is more extraordinary than his latest accomplishment in 2012: taking 20,000 steps to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. Elevation: 19,300 feet. He climbed 80 percent of it on his hands – propelling his torso forward, one hand after another, along the trail for eight days. 

He became a motivational speaker for the organization Me to We, founded by the same people as Free the Children, and started encouraging audiences to overcome their challenges. He decided the climb Kilimanjaro to raise $750,000 for the Kenyans who had “helped me find my passion,” he said.

Aardwolf (Proteles cristata)

The Aardwolf is a small, insectivorous mammal, native to East Africa and Southern Africa. The aardwolf is in the same family as the hyenas. Unlike many of its relatives in the order Carnivora, the aardwolf does not hunt large animals, or even eat meat on a regular basis; instead it eats insects, mainly termites – one aardwolf can eat about 250,000 termites during a single night by using its long, sticky tongue to capture them. The aardwolf lives in the scrublands, these are open lands covered with stunted trees and shrubs. The aardwolf is nocturnal, resting in burrows during the day and emerging at night to seek food. They have often been mistaken for solitary animals. In fact, they live as monogamous pairs with their young. A pristine, untouched pool has been discovered 700 feet (213 meters) below ground in Lechuguilla Cave, New Mexico, one of the world’s largest and most famous caves. This “virgin” pool, entirely untouched by humans, lies deep within a cave system renowned for its immense depth and towering chambers.

Scientists have described the pool as “completely pristine,” highlighting the unique bacteria in its waters that are believed to have evolved without any human interference. Surrounded by white frosted rock, the pool has an almost otherworldly appearance. Although its water seems to have a creamy, murky tint, this is merely an optical illusion.
