Info for Disabled Voters

Can’t make it to a polling place due to a disability or injury? Planning to vote in person but worried about barriers for disabled voters? Accommodations are available to make sure every person gets the chance to vote.

For homebound voters, I have a resource here.

All states have the option for absentee voting (vote by mail) if you are disabled. Some states will let you sign up for absentee voting without needing documentation, while some states do require proof of disability. This is a great option for anyone who can’t get to the polls.

In addition, you still have the right to register and vote if you are in a conservatorship or are under guardianship of another person as long as you are over 18 and a U.S. citizen. Eligible voters in long term care facilities (ex. nursing homes) cannot be denied the right to vote as well.

Additionally, all polling places must be wheelchair accessible and ADA complaint. If you are unable to physically fill out a ballot, the poll workers will be able to assist you, or can have a family member or friend assist as well. You do get to choose who helps you, so if someone is trying to get you to fill out options that you don’t want, you should report it and request someone else immediately.

As an Australian I find this so, so weird in an allegedly democratic country. It’s compulsory to vote here, we are relentlessly encouraged by the government to do so, and in fact, Australians will get fined if they don’t. Elections are held on Saturdays, there are literally numerous voting booths, frequently at school campuses, and both postal and early voting are popular options. Also, you can usually score some home baking or an Election (Bbq) Sausage at most sites.

Compulsory voting also exists (with varying degrees of enforcement) in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Democratic Republic of Congo, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, France (Senate elections only), Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Mexico, Nauru, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Singapore, Switzerland (one canton only), Thailand, Turkey and Uruguay.
