A look back in time
Silent Movie (1976)
(1968)
'Elect Frankenstein', ''Famous Monsters of Filmland'', #55, 1969
Ritual mountaineering axe with heart-shaped openwork. Japan. Nanbokucho to Muromachi period, 14th century AD.
The two hearts do not represent romance. In Japan they are inome, the boar's eye, an ancient apotropaic sign cut into weapons, temple fittings and even windows to ward off misfortune and summon courage. The motif was in use for over 1000 years and can still be seen in some temple windows at Shöju-in in Kyoto
Made from a forged iron head; wooden shaft spiral-wrapped with a bronze strip; H 179.8 cm, blade 28 x 25.5 cm.
From the Nara National Museum collection. Classified as Important Cultural Property.
