BROKE: free everyone incarcerated for non-violent marijuana charges

WOKE: “non-violent drug offender” includes VERY few people that are currently incarcerated. The term nonviolent is ambiguous and can include simple things like having a gun in the apartment where you have weed. Black offenders are more likely to be up charged for having a gun in their possession, so prosecutors will use that and then they’re categorized as violent. Excluding “violent crime” from your criminal justice reform message will make your reforms ineffective because “nonviolent” crimes account for a very small percentage of state prison populations.

The term “violent offense” is ambiguous as HELL and includes TONS of offenses that most of us wouldn’t think are that big of a deal. Plus, prosecutors are incentivized to stack charges (charging people with multiple, often overlapping offenses) because it coerces people into taking plea deals. That makes it MORE LIKELY that any offender can be categorized as “serious” or “violent.”
