Today marks a year since one of my best friends passed away. He was 32. The reality of the day hasn't hit me. it never will, because it wasn't the day I found out he died.

A year ago today, I was at a basement bar downtown having fun on karaoke night, the night before i had to go out of town for a convention, completely unaware that my friend was dying in his sleep on the other side of the country.

It had been over a month since the last time I'd been in discord vc with him. Since the last time I'd heard his voice in real time. How would I have known that that last time was going to be the last time?

A year ago tomorrow, I had just done the last of my packing and was fully ready, waiting for an irl friend to pick my sibling and I up so we could leave for the convention, when about 10-15 minutes before he arrived, I got the notification saying that my friend had passed. Another friend in our server made the announcement immediately after she saw the facebook post his mom had made.

Immediately after I read the message, the screenshot of his mother's post, I nearly collapsed in sobs. I cried silently in the backseat of my irl's car for the first hour of the drive, even as another friend tried to distract me with a game he was playing. I hardly had any energy by the time we got to the convention from trying to put on a mask of being better than I was.

I genuinely enjoyed myself that weekend despite how it started. On the last day, my sibling managed to get an orange d20 from a congoer who was giving out random dice. My friend loved dungeons and dragons, and his favorite color was orange. I'd been looking for an orange dice set (or at the very least a d20) the entire weekend up to that point.

On the drive back home, the reality hit me again. I started crying silently in the backseat again, and practically begged my sibling to play songs I could sing along to because singing has ways helped me stop crying.

The day I met my friend, his name was also Mikey, was July 20th, 2021 while playing among us. After a few games, I'd gotten kicked from the lobby. I thought nothing of it and went to find another one. The next night, July 21, I just so happened to join his lobby again, and immediately noticed that several other people in the lobby, as well as him, were wearing party hats. I quickly learned that it was his birthday and rushed to also put on a party hat. I played several games with them and eventually they invited me to their discord server.

Eventually me and Mikey grew really close. We had the same name, were both very picky in similar ways, and liked/loved a lot of the same things. We started joking that we were the same person. He was my fellow Mikey. He played guitar and was a bit of a music snob, so it meant a lot when I'd share songs I liked in the server and he always had positive things to say.

I wish I'd had longer than 3 years and a few months to know him. I went into my 20s with him as my friend. I was so sure I'd have him in my life for at least the rest of my 20s, too.

He and another friend had sang me happy birthday last year. It was the happiest I'd been on my birthday in a long time. This past birthday, all I could think of was how badly I wished I could hear him sing to me again. I know my future birthdays will be much of the same.

Today, the day he actually passed, isn't the day that I realized I'd never hear his voice or joke or share music with him again. It's the day he left me, yes, but tomorrow is the anniversary of the day I lost him, when my heart ripped in two.

It didn’t hit me until recently that people genuinely think Kamala Harris was a police officer because of all the people who call her a cop online.

Like I think maybe it’s important people should know she was a prosecutor. She was once a district attorney and later an attorney general for the state of California. And we can discuss how related that is to police work and how tied she is to the carceral system etc etc (but for fairness would have to include her record of pushing for lowering incarceration rates through programs helping former prisoners + her office refusing to jail folks for low level weed offense). But she was never a police officer. Like people should get that clear. Kamala Harris was never a police officer. She was a district attorney. She was never a police officer.

fun fact (not actually fun at all): I learned the night before my birthday last month that the cousin who "sexually assaulted" me was actually 12 when it happened. this whole time I was so sure he was 18... and then through seeing his full name on fb (I looked through my blocked accounts and found his former one) I was able to find his obituary online and saw that he was born in 1993.

I went from despising him for something I thought was done completely out of malice or perversion, to pitying him, because he was a child who either thought what he was doing to me was okay (which would imply he'd been sexually assaulted before), or simply didn't know how to change a diaper and was likely rougher than he should've been when he tried.

He was just a kid. and yeah, I know from my mom's experiences with CSA that older children *can* be that disgusting and malicious (her uncle who had abused her is 11 years older than her, and was 14, 15, and 19 when he did it), but I honestly don't think that was the case for my experience.

I'm the same age now as my cousin was when he died. And it took me reaching this age to realize he was just a kid who most likely just didn't know how gentle to be when changing a diaper.

just remembered again that the age of majority in my state is 19 which means my mom is even more of an accidental groomer as well as being a side chick early on (she didn't realize until later that he already had a girlfriend when he started pursuing her and publicly broke up with the girl at her (my mom's) job... but honestly she shouldn't have been surprised given he serially cheated on her)...

she was 20 when she started dating my dad who was 17 (she didn't want to go out with him at all, her friends pushed her to, this was my knowledge of the extent of the "accidental kinda-but-not-really-grooming"), she said they never did anything until after he was 18, she got pregnant with my sibling when he was 18 (she was 21), and they got married in august 1998, a month after he turned 19 (and my mom turned 22, they're exactly 3 years apart)

she didn't know the age of majority here was 19 until last year when I told her and she was disgusted with herself when she realized she had slept with and gotten pregnant by a minor. I even think she cried about it (she had experienced CSA for way too much of her childhood, and I know she would rather slit her own wrists than do that to a child, so learning she unknowingly did kinda broke her for a bit)

Personally, I have very few hard-limits in fiction (oddly enough one of those hard limits is infidelity/cheating) purely because one of my special interests is learning about different/strange kinks and what better way to explore those kinks than in fiction. The left wing alliance in France saw LaPen’s party winning in the first round of voting and hated that so hard that 138 of their candidates who were in third place — and could have split the vote — dropped out, and told their voters to vote for the one that would stop the RN from taking control.

People in the UK went aggressively tactical. The Labour Party has turned to be much much more centrist in the last five years. Got voted for anyway, because it got the Tories out.

I don’t know if Biden will stay in. I don’t know it’s the right choice for him to stay or go. As interested as I am in politics, this is an incredibly complex thing and one of the most important decisions of the decade.

Because I study queer media history as a hobby, am working on an intense project on media censorship, and the way Steven Universe was treated is a fucking textbook example of queer content getting shut down by the powers-that-be.

It was literally censored in reaction to its inclusion of queer content. This isn't a secret and it never has been. Rebecca Sugar has been completely open about how hard they had to fight against homophobia at Cartoon Network. Steven Universe is a case study of anti-queer censorship from a mindset of "think of the children."

Steven Universe is a historically significant piece of queer media, and watching in real-time as it went from "progressive queer show" to "the subject of the most rancid bad-faith discourse I have ever seen" is genuinely alarming to me as a queer media hobby-historian.
