[Can] New York revert to New Amsterdam? Can the bicycle, the urban answer to the wild mustang, slow down and put fenders on? Can the urban cyclist, he of the ragtag renegade clothes or shiny spandex, grow up and put on a tie?
Serious obstacles stand in the way. Even as bicycle sales and ridership are up, even as the city becomes more bike friendly than ever, the extreme poles of bike culture are still in many ways hostile to biking as it is done in the Netherlands. There, where riding a bicycle to work in a suit and tie is as notable an act as drinking a cup of coffee, there is no bike culture — all culture includes the bike.

James Vicente, a court attorney at the Kings County Criminal Court in Brooklyn, knows the quandary. After a trip to Amsterdam five years ago, Mr. Vicente was inspired to ride to work in his suit and tie. (He converted his road bike to a fixed-gear bike, with detachable fenders.)
“I liked the perversity of it,” he said. “I liked saying: ‘Anyone can do this. It’s normal.’ I never ride with a helmet either, even when people are telling me I’m an idiot. Riding a bike should be normal, and you shouldn’t have to wear a funny Styrofoam hat.”

Response to EUSAS Lecture 11.11.11
Kengo Kuma (with Cr8 Architecture) - V&A at Dundee
Having spent my last full year at Edinburgh College of Art I attended the lecture hosted by EUSAS outlining the new V&A at Dundee with anticipation of a building rooted in a site I have grown to love.
Despite its architects claim that it attempts to reconnect Dundee to its magnificent waterfront I must admit to having serious issue with the buildings immediate public realm and its poor understanding of what makes Dundee such an important and special city.
Dundee is a city which prides itself on its industrial heritage, its jute, its jam and its journalism. Dundee has always been a city whose Silv’ry Tay has afforded it connections to the wider world, including its longstanding relationship with the subcontinent. The new V&A at Dundee through its organic form (apparently derived to create axes) resembles a large boat about to embark on a journey across the globe. Unfortunately its bow faces inland, turning the buildings back to the Firth which brought wealth and knowledge to the city for generations.
Based upon its heritage of looking out, the marketing gurus have spent the last decades emphasising Dundee as the ‘City of Discovery’ after its most famous ship who took Robert Falcoln Scott to the Antarctic. Kuma’s Museum plaza is forced to incorporate the weak and un-contextual Discovery Point into their thoughts. However Kuma’s plan feels no nostalgia for the docks which the planners have systematically removed in the name of progress (the car). The V&A at Dundee puts the final nail into the coffin of the vast historic docklands, infilling the majority of the last remaining vessel of water disrespectfully leaving the Discovery marooned in a sea of windswept concrete. (Or perhaps Kuma is making a deliberate attempt to reference the bleak harshness of the Antarctic which would claim Scotts life?)
I found myself coming away with more questions and skepticism than answers despite heading in to the lecture with an open mind. Hopefully the V&A at Dundee will be the last of a generation of Millenium-era projects aiming to sweep away the ills of underinvestment in the United Kingdoms post-industrial cities. It is my wish the global credit crunch has finally put an end to this icon making architecture in the UK for a more restrained, thoughtful and subtle place making.

Forth Ports is being urged to make greater efforts to avoid periodic closures of a public cycle path at its Dundee site, or let cyclists use other roads at its facility that they are currently banned from using. The alternative, says a local cyclist, is for people on bikes to take to the pavement illegally or ride along a dual carriageway road.

With the winter starting to show signs of passing and a hint of spring (occasionally) in the air, we thought it was about time to share the "Green Circular" route maps again. Dundee has many great cycling routes and this one is still the most lauded. So get on your bike...and get out and explore the city on two wheels.

Tayside Police: CYCLE PASSPORT SESSION
CYCLE PASSPORT SESSION Tayside Police is holding a cycle passport session between 10am and 2pm on Saturday, January 28 at the Youth Area, Kirkton Community Centre, Derwent Avenue, Dundee. Last year hundreds of bikes were stolen in Dundee, ranging in value from a few pounds to over £1000. Tayside Police is hoping to ensure that bikes given as Christmas presents are kept safe and secure over the coming year by offering members of the public the chance to have them security marked. Bring your bike along and it will photographed and security marked and you will be issued with a ‘cycle passport’ which can be produced to the police if the bicycle is ever stolen. This form of crime prevention is vital to assist the police. This will be done free of charge courtesy of the Kirkton Tackle Crime Group. Anyone with any information that may be useful should contact Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222, or any police officer. Alternatively information can be passed anonymously via the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
