“Hey I’m gonna go skate.” Max held her board under her arm, while her mother cleaned up the kitchen.
“Okay honey be careful.” Her mother gave her a wary smile.
Nowadays her mom let her do almost anything. While on her way to the best area for her to skate, Max thought about how nice it would be if they had a skatepark here in Hawkins. It’d been forever since she’d last been to one. The last time was when—
Max closed her eyes, a single tear sliding down her cheek, she hadn’t even known she was tearing up. They’d never had a good relationship, Billy didn’t want to be around her, and she him. But they had their moments. The moments of mutual understanding. The understanding that their family is made of glass. Everyone in their home could shatter at a measly disruption. This understanding did warrant a few times where Max was able to clutch onto what some would call fond memories.
Once, back in California, Billy had been instructed by Neil to take her to the park, even though he felt she was far too old to go to a park. Billy just rolled his eyes and headed for his car. Max would later come to realize he was probably just glad to get out of the house.
As they rode silently away from their home, she turned to him to ask,“I don’t actually want to go to a park, I want to go to the skatepark. It’s just a little farther down the rode, close to the beach. Do you think we could go there instead? ”
Billy was silent for beat, she could tell he was weighing the options.
“Sure thing, MadMax. I’ll give you two hours there. I’ll be on the beach. Meet me there when times up, got it?” He turned his eyes away from the road for her confirmation. She nodded eagerly. He seemed pleased enough so he turned back to the road.
When they arrived at the skatepark, Max started to get out, but Billy grabbed her arm.
“2 hours.”
“Okay I know.” She rolled her eyes. Billy let go of her arm, sliding out of the car from his side.
“Yo Hargrove!” Someone called. Max looked over towards the skatepark to see a guy, looking to be Billy’s age, standing on one of the steep skate ramps. He was very messy looking, even to Max, who didn’t always care to brush her hair, or change her clothes day to day. He looked.. drunk. And greasy, like he worked with cars or something.
When she turned to Billy, who’d yet to say anything to this person, she immiediatly got the vibe Billy did not like this guy. His eyebrows were pinched, and mouth was in a slight snarl. But nonetheless he gave him a nod of acknowledgement.
“Go on Max.” Billy said, as he started for the beach. She found that to be quite anticlimactic. She hadn’t known Billy long, but she knew if there was someone around him he didn’t like, that person was about to have a really rough time. She figured maybe he didn’t feel like bothering today. The beach always had seemed to be one of few places where Billy was at his calmest. She’d always wondered why.
When Max stood before the skate park, she thought about what she wanted to do first. She’d been to skateparks enough times that she has a routine of ramps, and rails that she likes to go from, as well some games she liked to play. Watching someone try a trick then she’d see if she could as well. Racing people. Combining tricks, which led to many scrapes and bruises, but it was the thing she did the most.
She’d decided on the ramps first. She started with the concrete ramps, which she preferred over the wooden ones. She got to the top of one and lined up her board with the edge, then she shifted her weight forward, skating down the ramp. As she went down the guy from early, the grease boy, skidded past her, telling her to watch out. Max had to jerk her board slightly off course to avoid him.
“I was here first!” She shouted as he bailed off the ramp, presumedly to climb it again to go down again.
She crouched down once she was off the incline of the ramp, barreling towards the longest railing of the park. She smirked. Ramp, railing, into an ollie. She jumped, her board hitting the railing, and she started to slide.
About a second after she got on the railing, he was back. But this time he was on the other side of her, coming towards her.
“What the hell are you doing?! Bail! Get out of my way!” She yelled. But he wouldn’t do it. He was playing a game of chicken with her. She panicked and put too much weight in the half of her board not in contact with the railing, and she fell. Her back smacked the concrete, the wind sucked out of her. She rolled onto her side, wheezing as she tried to get the air back in her.
Someone reached down, grabbed her arm, and hoisted her up. Billy. With a murderous look in his eye he took a step in front of her.
“Max,” He seethed with a cigarette wagging out of his mouth, and the murderous look in his eye, Billy made grease boy look like a meek child,“Go get in the car.”
Max took one look at him and she scooped up her board, and she went for the camaro. She had to walk slowly, so she wouldn’t strain her back. It wasn’t hurting too much, she knew the pain would subside, she just needed to give it a second.
When she slid into the car she thought about what was currently happening with Billy.
She sat there for almost twenty minutes before she saw him approaching.
When he got to in the car he surveyed her face, checking her pupils and her overall status. He knew a concussion when he saw one, and she seemed to be okay.
Max looked at his hands, they were red, and bruised.
She was a about to say something when he held his hand up.
“Don’t worry about it. He’s not going to mess with you anymore.”
“Okay.” She went quiet for a moment then added,”Thanks.”
“Anytime kid.”
billy at the beach, finally.
I need you.
Max boredly flipped one of her many Wonder Woman comics, she’d already read it multiple times, and was just skimming through it as a pass time.
“Why are you pushing your friends away? I thought those little shits were important to you.”
“They are important to me, but they don’t understand.” Max closed her comic.
“Understand what?”
“You know what.”
“Mm nope.”
“That I can’t handle their pity! That I’m fine!” She snapped slamming her fist down on her lap.
“They’re try to help you dumbass.”
“By pitying me?! I don’t need it! Besides I—“
“You what?”
“I—” She couldn’t finish the sentence.
“They pity you because they feel sorry for you, and they feel sorry for you because you lost someone.”
“I did—but I didn’t at the same time! You know that!”
“Max I’m not here!”
She blinked,”What?”
“You know that I’m not here.”
“Yes. You are.”
“Max,” Billy’s voice broke,”Max I died. You were there.”
“No!” She shook her head furiously,“You’re here!”
“You need to figure out why I’m here.”
“Because you’re alive!” Even when the words spilled out of her mouth Max, didn’t believe them, but she forced herself to. Forced her mind, to believe that he was really before her, and star court never happened.
Max scooped down grabbing her backpack, which had been next to her on the floor, she unzipped it, pulling out his denim jacket she’d seen him wear more times than not. It’s been her anchor whenever things got to hard. She hugged it to her chest, it smelled like cigarettes, his cologn, and hair spray. It smelled like him. And his camaro. She never thought she’d miss that god damn camaro. She put the jacket on, grabbing the sides and pulling it tightly around her, in semblance that he was hugging her.
“Max..”
“You’re here,” she could feel tears brimming in her eyes,“Because I need you. I need you here with me, because I don’t think I can handle being here without you. I never understood it before. I didn’t. I didn’t understand what you did for me, whether it intentional or not, you’ve kept Neil away from me and I,” Max couldn’t control the tears spilling out of her eyes now,“I wish I knew. I wish we got along better I wish,” she closed her eyes a sob raking through her,“I wish you knew I love you. Billy—” she opened her eyes.
He was gone. Another sob clawed through her and let her pain consume her, crying harder than she ever had before in her life.
“I love you,”she whispered as more sobs raked over her. She needed him, but he was gone. And he was never coming back.
And she, she was alone.
There are so many post billy's death! Max posts I want to read but my heart. Just. Can't. Take. It. I'm still not ready.
It’s hard to read anything that treads into Billy’s death or max in the wake of his death. One day when you’re ready, tred carefully. It can be very sad.
Rampage
Max limped up the side walk to her home, dragging her skateboard behind her. Her board, that had been snapped in half by her idiotic brother, once again broke as she was riding downhill on it, after she’d tried to duct tape it back together a few months ago. She should’ve known it wasn’t going to hold up for very long. She rubbed at her raw palms and busted knee.
It was only her luck that she broke her board on the first day of winter break. She huffed angrily, looking at her split board. It lasted longer than she originally thought it would though.
When she got inside she tossed her broken board on the couch, she really liked that board too. She sighed, heading to the bathroom to fix up her hands and knee. Christmas was in one week, maybe she could ask her mom or Neil if that could be her Christmas gift. A brand new board. She searched for the first aid kit, and when she found it, her brow furrowed on confusion. It was really light. She popped the plastic box open to find the almost everything was used up. The role of bandages was now a minuscule size, the antiseptic was almost completely gone, and the neosporin cream was completely gone. Who the hell used the first aid kit this much?
She used what was left of the bandages on her knee, after cleaning it out. She decided to let her hands air it out, since she’d ran out of bandages.
“Max, Billy! It’s time for dinner!” Her mother called.
Max put the kit away and headed for the kitchen. Billy and Neil were already at the table when she arrived, her mother was carrying the food over to the table. Billy stared at his empty plate, while Neil read today’s paper.
“Everyone dig in.” Her mom said smiling as she settled into her seat. Neil folded up his paper, and the two Hargrove’s dug in. Max knew Billy liked to grab the biggest servings, so she learned to back off. He ate so much then worked it all off later. She didn’t really understand why guys did that. Her mom always said it was because Billy’s a “growing boy,” but Max thought that was bullshit. He just liked food.
After Max had her food on her plate she decided directing the question at her mom would make the odds of her getting a new board higher.
“So..” Max started, and everyone at the table except Billy looked at her. He kept shoveling food into his face,”My board broke today. I was wondering if maybe I could get a new one for Christmas?” She looked at her mom, giving her the sweetest smile she could possibly muster.
Billy’s eyebrow twitched, did he break her board? Right. He did because he was mad at her. It was an old board anyway, they’ll get her a new one.
“That board finally broke?” Neil leaned forward on his elbows looking at his stepdaughter,”Good. I’m glad. It’s about time you stop your boyish little hobby.”
“What?” Max’s jaw dropped. Boyish hobby? Skateboarding was not a boyish hobby,”No it’s not! It’s one of my favorite things to do! Please, I don’t have enough money for a new board! It’s the only thing I want for Christmas!” Max pulled a piece a paper out of her jacket pocket, she unfolded it showing them an add for skateboards, she had a specific one circled, it was another Madrid skateboard with with bug details on it, the photo next to it showed off the bottom which was mint green and a pinkish-red. It said Madrid on the bottom as well, along with word Rampage scrawled on it.
“Maxine, I think Neil’s right,” Her mother glanced at Neil who smiled,“Its time for new hobbies.”
Billy, watched them all boredly. Neil pulled something very similar on him when he was kid. No more surfing. It was for his own safety, his father told him, he couldn’t get crushed by those waves and get hurt. Bullshit. He knew it was because surfing was something sacred between he and his mother. Billy looked at Max. She was getting red faced, as she did when she was frustrated.
“At least consider it!” Max passed them the paper. Neil took it before Susan could and he sat it next to his plate.
“We will see.” Neil said in hard tone that Billy knew all to well. He wasn’t going to consider it.
Dinner went on silently after that, and when everyone was finished, Susan cleared the plates, Max went to her room to read comics, and Neil folded up his newspaper. He picked up his dirty napkin, and the magazine ad max gave him and he tossed them both in the trash. He then headed for the living to watch football.
Susan watched Neil go and she frowned. Billy, stayed at the table, tapping his fingers on the table in thought.
“Susan.” Billy walked over to the trash can.
“Yes?” Susan responded, looking up from the kitchen sink.
“Can I go on ahead and have the fifty bucks you and my dad are going to give me for Christmas? I need to get something for my car.” He reached into the trash can.
“Of course you can.” Susan smiled, drying her hands off,“If you need a little more than that, I have eighty on me. That way you can get something else for yourself as well.” She opened up her purse, pulling four twenty dollar bills from her purse. Billy took them.
“Thanks Susan.” Billy shoved the money in his pocket along with a folded piece of paper.
When Billy settled into his car he pulled the skateboard ad out of his pocket. The store was close to the edge of Hawkins, thirty minutes away. Lovely. Billy started his car up, and he drove across town.
The shop was small, which wasn’t surprising to Billy, since this was Hawkins and the amount of people who actually skate here is probably one. His sister Max. Luckily for him though, that made finding the board easy. He placed the board and a few stickers on the counter to purchase. The amount came out to be just under a hundred dollars.
Billy didn’t really know why he was getting her this board, but what he did know, was that he didn’t want Max to live with the longing to go skateboarding, like he’s had to live with the longing of surfing.
Billy kept the board and stickers on the trunk of his car until Christmas Day.
He had it hidden behind the couch by the time Max was opening her gifts, and he couldnt decide whether or not he should give it to her now, or later when he could do it without Neil around. Neil would know about the board. There’s no way he couldn’t because Max will obviously be using it. Maybe he’d be happy that Billy had gotten his sister a gift in the first place.
Neil stood up after Max opened her last gift. He left his recliner and went to where Susan was sitting, next to the edge of their couch.
“There’s one more gift Maxine.” He said as he reached behind the couch, pulling out the skateboard that Billy had bought for her.
Max squealed in delight saying quiet a few “No ways,” and other things. She ran over to Neil and hugged him. It wasn’t a long hug, before she took the skateboard from him and ran outside. Billy checked out. He leaned back in the recliner and closed his eyes, he had tried. He really did. But once again, Neil stepped in his way.
At least she had a new board.
Max eventually came back inside, when Billy remembered he still had the stickers. He followed her back towards their room.
“Max.” She turned to him.
“Yeah?” She held her board close to her hip, and Billy wondered if she thought he was here to break it.
“Merry Christmas.” He held the stickers out to her. Max blinked. He’d never gotten her a gift before, much less one she’d actually like. She took the stickers and looked at him unsurely.
“Thank you..?” There was a hint of a question behind her voice.
Billy nodded, looking like he wanted to say something else. And he did. He wanted so badly to say, “I got you this board, it’s my gift to you, don’t let Neil take anything away from you.” But he didn’t. Maybe it was better this way. So instead, he left her in the hallway, and went back to his room.
Max stared after him, confused. She looked at the stickers and liked all of them, and would be using them all, but she wondered.
How did he know she was getting a new board?
Anyone want a life preserver?
the ending we should’ve gotten 🥺
Newsflash: If you’re hating on Dacre Montgomery because of a CHARACTER that he played in a TV SHOW than you’re a dumbass who needs to learn how to separate fact from fiction. Don’t hate the poor boy for doing his job. He does nothing but mind his own goddamn business. Hating on an actor because of a character they play isn’t a personality trait. I swear some of you have way too much time on your hands.
