You know what I find most depressing of all about the novelists who turn to AI generated images to make covers for their books? A lot of them know and are even friends with artists who would be more than happy to make a cover for them. Some would even give them a discount, but they use AI generation anyway because allure of it being free is just that enticing.

It's one more reason I hate AI. It's psychologically addictive and the biggest, most venomous hook is that it is free. And yet, like many other addictions, the fix is not as free as we think. Data farms, job destruction and the fact that artists remain invisible because even other artists cease to support them are factors. There is also a psychological factor at play. Once you are willing to accept one trashy thing just because it's free, where else will your standards slip?

AI is not a last resort or an alternative when you can't afford an artist. It's a trap. If you can't afford an artist right now, save and wait. It's better than becoming an AI junkie.

When someone uses AI it makes me NOT want to buy their products because if someone was too cheap/lazy to hire real people, they must be too cheap/lazy to make a good product and therefore don’t deserve our hard earned cash, no one wants junk.
