So my brain was thinking stupid things like it always does, and I this is what randomly popped in my head.

If we were to stick 1987 Leonardo into Demon Slayer, I believe that he’d be killed.

Not by a demon though. Oh, no. He’d be murdered by Mr. Hagenzuka, the sword smith, because YALL SAW HOW MAD HE GOT ABOUT TANJIRO BREAKING/LOSING HIS SWORD TWICE. TANJIRO ABOUT DIED. THIS VERSION OF LEO HAS BROKEN NOT ONE, BUT TWO SWORDS MOE TIMES THAN I CAN COUNT.

THEY BREAK LIKE EVERY OTHER EPISODE…… ok, mabey not that often but you get my point. The moral of the story! DONT LET LEO INTO THE DEMON SLAYER CORPS. AT LEAST 1987 LEO.

Hello, fellow Baxter buddy! (I know Mikey is your favorite, but Baxter also seems to be on the short dial list.) I have a question that I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on. When it comes to 1987 Baxter, some of us in the TMNT fandom view him in a very sympathetic light and we interpret him as someone who has a meek and gentle demeanor, veering more to kindness or thoughtfulness vs. the calculating side that's more prominent in some of his other interpretations, including the Mirage source material. This is obviously derived from his debut episode, as well as some hints here and there later on (especially in the second season) that he still maintains some form of decorum.

But so often a good chunk of the fandom seems to see him as lacking those traits, veering more to all the mad scientist tropes, the cowardly minion, and the purely bonkers fly guy bent on revenge. While he does also possess these traits, I worry that those dominate how the fandom interprets him, and so to portray him as the meeker, milder version would almost be seen as out of character.

Sometimes it makes me wonder if I'm not focusing on the parts of '87 Baxter that make him, well, him, and instead older artifacts that were meant to be buried under how he "should" be viewed. But to me, to strip those qualities away would hollow him out and flanderize one of the most nuanced characters within the '87 show. He's one of the only characters who changes so much throughout the course of the series (Irma being another, I think), and he has so many other unique qualities, such as mutating under unconventional circumstances (even though he calls himself a mutant in the show, I don't think of him as a mutant with a capital "M" because he didn't transform via mutagen. Mona Lisa is another example of this to me.)

What do you think about this? Do you think it's a silly thought to entertain? Of course, fans can interpret characters however they want, but I like to write them in-character, and part of the reason I was drawn to Baxter was for his dual nature, especially the softer side that I'd like to preserve. Sorry for the book!

Ack! I’m so sorry for the wait! I thought I had answered this one!

I think Baxter in the 87 verse true personality is more aligned with who we first saw: someone that wants to be recognized, someone that doesn't have a lot of self confidence and someone that is easily manipulated.

While the other iterations of Baxter certainly fall into the mad scientist category, I don't really see that with this Baxter. I see his more villainous behaviors as: survival (being shackled to the Shredder), people pleasing maybe combined with a bit of Stockholm Syndrome and straight up psychosis.

As the series goes on, you see him adopting a lot of Shredder’s like/dislikes (blaming the turtles especially) and that is a textbook trauma survival tactic. Once he gets away from Shredder, however briefly, a lot of that fades. But he just gets pulled back in again.

As for the psychosis, as the series goes, they lean more and more into the fly instincts. It seems to overpower his human consciousness, to the point that he loses connection with intelligence he used to have. So, in my mind, he quite literally is not in his right mind.

I think Baxter absolutely could be redeemed in this universe and even become an ally.
