A Slow climb: while many are making adjustments to creating responsible denim there are many factors to think about, but a conscious consumer can help make change with their dollars. Here's a short list to brands that are creating with natural indigo. Help boost the 1% of natural indigo production by going to the right brands. A higher cost, usually more than $100 for a pair, that brings longevity and change to our consumer culture.
Synthetic Blue versus Natural Blue a report by Fibershed, stats on jeans by CNN While no study has fully characterized the human and environmental consequences of synthetic indigo production, an understanding of the process certainly raises concern . For example, one of the many intermediate products in the process above is aniline, a chemical that is toxic if ingested, inhaled, or touched that inhibits the ability of blood to carry oxygen and is fatal in high exposures . In contrast, natural indigo can be grown in an entirely sustainable manner . It can be grown in a way that promotes soilhealth and soil carbon sequestration, and no dangerous chemicals or processes are required . Even the waste- products can be employed beneficially: After the pigment has been extracted, the plant residue can be composted and used as a fertilizer and the remaining water can be reused to irrigate crops. Currently natural indigo pigment represents less than one percent of the indigo dye produced and used worldwide. while consumers in the US alone buy approximately 450 million pairs of jeans every year. On average, US consumers have 7 pairs of jeans in their wardrobe.
Organic or Non-organic cotton
Denim is made from cotton fibers, non-organic cotton has been the most popular in use, however over 70% of the worlds cotton is a GMO seeds that withstands a very toxic pesticide. It takes 1,500 gal of water to produce 1.5lbs of cotton for 1 pair of jeans. Organic cotton is produced with non-GMO seed and uses less water in it's production process. In conclusion, to help create less damage, only buy organic cotton.

I came across a story that showed a Google map and of an image of a river in China that flowed into a bay that supplied water to Hong Kong and millions of people.  The river had a large streak of indigo blue you could see from outer space.  The pollution was coming from an area that billed itself the “blue jeans capital of the world” due to the amount of jeans they manufactured (200 million pairs of jeans per year including 60 different foreign brands) and sent to North America. ...It’s often mentioned that the next war will not be fought over oil, but rather water.  I think that’s a strong possibility as we keep growing in population, while at the same time, losing our integral water resources. The rivers are like the capillaries of our planet and we can’t live without them – the planet would die if we lose rivers to pollution.

Solutions in Farming and Fiber
This past summer I had the chance to expose students 1st-8th about the effects of synthetic dyes, overseas garnment production and the rest of the whole picture. The image I placed on the slide show seemed to have struck a couple people, and I was surprised to later find the same image on Fibershed's report on Indigo. The underlying issues of synthetic dues are the hidden cost of their toxic nature. While effects have not been thoroughly documented, images like this leave a lot to the imagination as far as what it is doing to waterways in various parts of Asia like India and China.
I was surprised to learn from a collegue that when asked about the summer program a student talked about natural dyes and the pollution of rivers. This awareness helped me to see that we are in the time that their problem is our problem, and a problem for this generation to tackle.
While the problems seem vast, it is always enlightening to know there have been and are people already up to the task in helping bring a viable solution. I point back to Fibershed again who have been researching and putting things into action regarding local production in farming and fiber production. By sourcing their latest reportIndigo: Sources, Processes and Possibilities for Bioregional Blue I found a number of answers to the questions I had been asking.
Their conclusions derive that natural indigo alone would not serve as the sole replacement of all synthetic indigo produced today. Currently natural indigo serves 1% of what is being used worldwide. The amount of land and water required to process this is not realistic. What has been proposed is undiscovered methods needing to be researched on how to merge the production of both natural and synthetic.
The underlying problem in production is not so much the means but largely in the system itself. The amount of fabric being produced and consumed is largely what is causing harm. One of the suggested solutions is demonstrating a symbiotic relationship between land and people, farm and fiber, that work to produce something together. Responsible production takes more time, but produces higher value and benefits local economies and people in the long run.
As a dyer, I may be able to create a few pieces for myself, as a weaver I may be able to create a piece of fabric that I could give to a dyer, as a farmer I may be able to grow and harvest a plant to produce color to give to a dyer. With this type of collaboration we can envision a circular production system that gives back as much as it gives out.
