New Study Analyzes a Mesolithic Cemetery Full of Children and an Odd Standing Burial

Researchers have found some unique burials amongst the remains in one of the oldest cemeteries in Europe – the 8,500-year-old Gross Fredenwalde cemetery. So far nine skeletons have been excavated at the site, including four children under the age of six, a six month old infant, a woman buried with a child on her belly, and a young man who was buried in a standing position.

Life update:

This Bioarchaeologist is changing course for a moment. I’m currently on track to obtain a Masters in Sociology! I plan to focus on the societal and cultural impacts of archaeologist/ archaeology on Indigenous communities. Will be back to Archaeology for my Doctorate!

The 8,500-year-old Mesolithic remains of a 6-month-old subadult discovered in a cemetery called Gross Fredenwalde in Germany. The remains were removed “in a single, 660-pound (300 kilogram) block of earth” to allow for closer examination in a lab setting. The bones and surrounding soil are stained red from ochre used to decorate the body during burial. This type of find is particularly rare due to the fragility of infant bones, making this a particularly special find.

The Lovers of Modena, recently found to both be male, Modena, Italy.

The sex of the remains, which date back between the 4th and 6th century, were determined based on proteins from tooth enamel. This technique was unavailable when they were first unearthed back in 2009. The remains had been too badly degraded for other sexing methods to be accurate, which is why we are learning now that the skeletons buried hand-in-hand are both male. Researchers at the University of Bologna now speculate that these men may have been related or perhaps two soldiers buried together. It is impossible to determine sexual orientation from remains and burials. However, during the time period in which these individuals lived, homosexuality was considered a crime. As the burial was most definitely intentional, that makes the lover scenario all the more unlikely

Gruesome discovery: chopped up and stripped of flesh

EXCAVATION in Somerset have revealed a gruesome glimpse of Iron-Age Britain.

Archaeologists have discovered evidence of a massacre involving hundreds, if not thousands of people, with some of the slaughtered bodies being stripped of their flesh or chopped up.

Human remains unearthed from an ancient site near Yeovil have cut marks, often in multiple rows, and occurring at the ends of important joints.

“It is as if they were trying to separate pieces of the body”, according to Dr Marcus Brittain, the Cambridge archaeologist and head of a major excavation of Britain’s largest Iron-Age hill fort, Ham Hill. Read more.

Skull found by dog walker is Iron Age woman

A skull found by a dog walker in Somerset dates back to the Iron Age, scientists have revealed.

Roger Evans of Newtown found the skull on the banks of the River Sowy in March last year.

Scientists say the head belonged to a woman aged 45 or older in the late Iron Age - 380-190 BC, centuries before the first Roman invasion of Britain.

Further investigations nearby revealed timber posts, which are being tested to see if they are from the same date.

Following the discovery, the Environment Agency (EA) reduced water levels in the area to allow South West Heritage Trust (SWHT) and its own archaeologists to search for more clues. 

No more human remains were found but the series of round, timber posts driven into the river bed are thought to have been a remnant of a causeway or raised walkway. Read more.

Radiocarbon dating reveals mass grave did date to the Viking age

A team of archaeologists, led by Cat Jarman from the University of Bristol’s Department of Anthropology and Archaeology, has discovered that a mass grave uncovered in the 1980s dates to the Viking Age and may have been a burial site of the Viking Great Army war dead.

Although the remains were initially thought to be associated with the Vikings, radiocarbon dates seemed to suggest the grave consisted of bones collected over several centuries. New scientific research now shows that this was not the case and that the bones are all consistent with a date in the late 9th century. Historical records state that the Viking Great Army wintered in Repton, Derbyshire, in 873 A.D. and drove the Mercian king into exile.

Excavations led by archaeologists Martin Biddle and Birthe Kjølbye-Biddle at St Wystan’s Church in Repton in the 1970s and 1980s discovered several Viking graves and a charnel deposit of nearly 300 people underneath a shallow mound in the vicarage garden. Read more.

Remains of a man “crushed by a boulder” at Pompeii. (x)

The remains of a 30-year-old man were discovered lying on what was the first floor of a building on a new excavation site called “Royal V” in May 2018. Though it appears that the boulder crushed the man during the eruption, his skull was discovered nearby due to erosion in June 2018. Instead of having been crushed as archaeologists first believed, it appears he died prior to the boulder landing where his skull should have been.
