things will work out and you will be fine. a year from now youâll think back and smile and be proud of yourself for pulling through.

âWe are travelers on a cosmic journey, stardust, swirling and dancing in the eddies and whirlpools of infinity. Life is eternal. We have stopped for a moment to encounter each other, to meet, to love, to share. This is a precious moment. It is a little parenthesis in eternity.â

11.15.17 - Wednesday
Iâve found this amazing Biology/Biochemistry YouTube channel (AK Lectures)! Iâve got a huge exam tomorrow and this guy has been saving my butt. Wish I knew about him at the beginning of the year.
So to any of yâall that are taking or will be taking a Biochemistry course, check this guy out. His lectures are super detailed and clear!
The same story year after year and still we ârecommendâ this piece of shit pharmaceutical and big pharma rakes in the profits.  It has never been shown to decrease the number of flu cases, for any population.  And the statistics quoted in this article are questionable. CDC likes to lump all possible flu deaths into one statistic without actual verification of flu.  And some doses still contain mercury - you need to ask for mercury free, but if you donât knowâŠ.
Flu vaccine ineffective for people 65 and older last winter
The vaccine was about 42 percent effective in preventing illness severe enough to send a patient to the doctorâs office. But it was essentially ineffective protecting some age groups. That includes people 65 and olderâthe group thatâs hardest hit by flu, suffering the most deaths and hospitalizations.
But it had no clear effect in adults 18 to 49, or among the oldest adults.
And of course if you are obese - good luckâŠ
You do realise that there is no real evidence that the thimerosal in vaccines does any significant amount of damage to the population?
You do realise that the article youâre posting doesnât mention mercury in vaccines even once?
You do realise that the flu vaccine is ALWAYS only designed to protect against the yearly strains of influenza that are PREDICTED to be dominant, and therefore cannot be expected to be 100% effective? Thatâs a risk you take when you get the damn thing. No one is hiding the fact that the normal flu vaccine isnât incredibly effective on the over 65s. Thatâs why we have the high dose vaccine.
You do realise that even if the flu vaccine doesnât PREVENT the flu in over-65s, it is still capable of reducing severity of flu symptoms?
You do realise that the very article youâre quoting also states that the vaccine did a good job protecting children (also a very high risk group) last year?
And finally, if you doubt the statistics in the article, then why arenât you actually debunking them and why arenât you sourcing your claims? You know, like scientists are supposed to do?
âIt has never been shown to decrease the number of flu cases, for any population.â SOURCE?
âAnd the statistics quoted in this article are questionable.â PROOF?
â CDC likes to lump all possible flu deaths into one statistic without actual verification of flu.â SOURCE?
Bruh, just admit that you only posted this article so you could use your platform to push an anti-vaxx agenda and leave it at that. This is literally the least scientifically sound post Iâve ever seen you make, and thatâs fucking saying something. I understand if you donât get around to replying to this though, I assume you probably have to pick your kid up from soccer practise or something.Â
@biologyweeps do you wanna play around with this, or is this guy really a lost cause at this point?
In a world where people are losing trust in vaccines (not only for themselves, but for their children and animals as well), it is a damn shame to see a popular science blog like the OP spreading such absolute drivel on this site.
Also can we just talk about the obesity comment made by OP? Vaccines arenât drugs. They donât require a scaled amount to obtain the same response in different weight creatures like drugs do. The immune system requires X number of molecules of antigen to cause a response. So vaccines are formulated to have at least X molecules of antigen so that antigen-presenting cells (like dendritic cells or macrophages) or B cells or T cells can pick them up and realize âHey, this is a bad thing and itâs in high enough concentration that I need to be concerned about it, let me take it and go to all my friends in the immune system organs like lymph nodes, spleen, Peyerâs patches, thymus, and bone marrow and tell them that we all need to go attack it.â
That specific number of antigen molecules required to initiate the chain reaction doesnât change based on weight. Just like it doesnât matter if you have a ton of dynamite or just one stick; all it requires is lighting one fuse to set the whole thing off.
We recently had a controversy about this in the veterianary field because one vet was feeding off the anti-vaxxersâ worries about over-vaccinating and claiming you could give half-doses of vaccines to small dogs. Like⊠thatâs not how this works and you just became the Andrew Wakefield of the vet world, putting terrible ideas in idiotsâ heads.
@currentsinbiology is great at presenting pseudo-scientific bullshit under the guise of being an actual science blog. Â In addition to this terrible post about vaccines, they also posted an article about autism on Autism Awareness Day that likened autism to an epidemic. Â
The original article was written by a quack for a Huffington Post blog and had no scientific sources backing up his ableist claims. Â He also believes that a proper diet can âcureâ autism and literally promotes child abuse as a means to get a child to eat.
Apparently the article was so shitty that it actually got pulled down and is now inaccessible, but currentsinbiology kept it up. Â They were also called out numerous times in the notes for posting the article but never acknowledged any of the criticism.

Academic excellence is not gifted, it is earned. Knowlege is not a nebulous substance that enters you via osmosis, you have to acquire it and keep it, integrate it, make it yours. The mind is not something that is, but something that has to be actively formed.
