no season 2 was so much better than season 1!!

s1 had clumsy plot holes,character development, and pacing that made those last few episodes especially sloppy, not to mention the graphic violence that was especially distasteful (re: pope getting jumped) and the lack of awareness in writing when it came to characters of color and race/class in general.
But what made that season, and what kept me watching, was the ‘non-romantic’ relationships, both kie/Sarah and jj/pope that hinted to a much more nuanced storytelling, to make what was a so-so show say and do something meaningful, and what it meant to poor kids stealing from the rich, IF it decided to put effort into fleshing that out, especially Denmark Tannys legacy and connection.
s2 took that potential from s1 and decided to throw it out the window, doubling down on all the things we didn’t need more of: badly written het relationships, treating women like objects, multiple near-death experiences that mean nothing when they come and go in a split second, multiple plot lines both tangential and meaningless, the blatant ignorance of how race/class interact in literally EVERY setting, among many others. s2 took it a step further by comically inching as far away from non-het interactions as possible, using kie AND sarah for all the het drama with little room for anything beside that and multiple, traumatic experiences in lieu of actual character development.
I’m not saying we needed ships to be canon to make the show good, but completely ignoring the canon relationship dynamics? Mind you in 2021 the possibility of jj or pope/ Sarah or kie not being straight/ being in a romantic relationship with eachother isn’t far fetched, especially when s1 set up jjpope and a history of kiesarah so well. But to backpedal so hard, barely letting jjpope or kiesarah have time together and talk about non plot or het romance?? If you were never going to make it canon, why ruin the only well established relationship dynamics of the show? What are u scared of?
Maybe it could’ve been better, especially with the addition of cleo and popes relationship to Denmark Tanny, but they managed to fuck that up by brushing through them, using cleo more as a convenient plot device that anything (Sarah gets shot and we go over it for a whole episode, cleo gets hit by a CAR and shes good and quipping in less than 5 min- can u tell me how little u actually care about a character without saying it!?)
So many people have said it before, but the writers gave us s2 like it was a season 1 remake and worse because they thought they figured out why it was watched in the first place, and for me, that had absolutely nothing to do with the things they seem to care about.
