Ok ok I’m back on my bullshit to say that I think that the absolute most delightful thing I can imagine is for Val to spend many hours in futility trying to find women for Timothy to fall in love with because he wants his brother to get over Mercy Underhill already and he tries so hard but he’s so unsubtle about it.

The whole thing makes Timothy SO CRANKY and then Jim absolutely maneuvers a meeting between Timothy and a bright clever actress that he works with and they absolutely hit it off and fall in love and Jim is just like, 😎 I’m a genius and perfect brother in law.

One thing that the Timothy Wilde trilogy absolutely excels at is the whole, “yeah so queer people are serial liars” thing

It feels like every fifty pages, Tim learns something brand new about his brother and is just like, ABSOLUTELY FLUMMOXED every time. And most of those things aren’t even secrets, it’s just that Val is so used to not saying certain things that he just absolutely never brings them up, and that then feeds into the vision of Val that exists only inside of Tim’s mind. And it’s like, oh yeah he gives out jobs and food to new immigrants on Sundays, didn’t you know, Timothy?

No, Timothy DID NOT KNOW THAT.

by far one of the funniest scenes in the first book is when Timothy is just like, “oh no you’ve added sodomy to the list of your crimes,” and Val is too busy drunkenly shouting across the room to notice for a beat and then he’s like, in all earnest, “wait a SECOND young Tim, what’re you talking about, I’m not gay, I just let my gay best friend give me blowjobs sometimes, what’s wrong with that?”

Like honestly, how Timothy didn’t yeet himself across the country during this Insane Conversation, I will never understand

a super entertaining thought that occurred to me today is that it’s entirely possible for Jim to have crossed paths with Walt Whitman, although Whitman would’ve been completely appalled by the company that he kept, given how anti-Irish Catholic and anti-Tammany he was.

I absolutely think that there’s a point where Bird goes from calling Valentine “Mister V” and starts calling him “Uncle V,” a personal head canon which endlessly delights me. I absolutely think that they dance in Jim’s living room while Jim plays the piano on the regular. Just a delightful little atypical family.

Valentine Wilde, this terribly sharp bruiser of a man who fights fires and runs half of Manhattan and loves a good bare knuckle fight, and who also dotes on his terrifyingly clever niece, and who would also kill a man for James Playfair. Meeting high society British noblemen. JUST IMAGINE. What a blast.

ok but back to Jim. it is actually really impressive that he was able to make something of himself in an entirely new country. sure, he was chucked out of England with a decent amount of money (I translated to modern day terms and his father sent him off with like, 2k, which is nothing to sneeze at) but he also didn’t know anyone. he made a stable career out of his music anyways and found a home and made friends and quite accidentally found himself in love with a man who is MORE than capable of protecting them both from the long arm of the law.

and I HIGHLY suspect that that level of success would be a surprise to people back in England.
