BIOGRAPHY (summary)

Bishanpal was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, to a mother who was only nineteen at the time and an American father who left when Bishanpal was only three months old. His mother started working on her future, becoming a businesswoman and later a politician. Her son had freedom when he was younger, but his life grew stricter as his mother’s time at home increased. He went from playing soccer outside all day to being in the spotlight because of his mother’s success. She wanted him to have a better life than she had, no matter what it took. He kept his grades up, got a doctorate in Robotic Engineering, and developed a Panic Disorder. Just after his 28th birthday, he realised he couldn’t take it any longer. He told his mother that he was going to take a break, find some small town in America to hide out in, and spend some time out of the spotlight.

Bishanpal made a thoughtful face. “Yeah, why not.” He chuckled. “I am not familiar with the practice, so honestly, I don’t have the same prejudice, I will gladly put on some face paint,” he said. “I’ll probably go for a tiger.”

“i don’t think I’ve ever been somewhere that screamed ‘fall’ so loud.” Ronnie said to Bishan as they sipped on some hot cocoa. They scrunched up their nose a bit before pulling out a flask from their jacket and pouring some of the dark liquid into the cocoa. Tasting it, Ronnie hummed. “Much better. …Want some?” They offered. 

Bishanpal chuckled at the appearance of the liquoir and shook his head. “No thank you,” he told them, though he didn’t mind that anyone would spice up their hot cocoa, if he was more of a daredevil he might. “Honestly, this is my first fall,” he said. “I don’t think I knew what fall meant before Bradford. So many leafs on the ground,” he said. “I can’t imagine the cleaning job.”

Liz shook her head as an answer, even though later she did voice her answer as well. “I haven’t. Not even for continuing studying or something. I did homestudies while I started working part time at the school already. I’m still working at the school, only in a different position that I started in.” She listened to the reasoning behind the fact that he had moved to Bradford Springs and nodded slowly. “Well, Bradford Springs is definitely a place where you can get some time off from busy city life, I’m sure of that. Have you been enjoying the town so far?”

Bishanpal nodded. Though he could imagine staying in Jakarta all his life, he couldn’t imagine staying in a small town like this for all his life. He didn’t think he could handle the smallness. “So you like… know everyone personally?” He asked, a smile in his eyes, studying her. “You’re a teacher?” He shrugged, it felt odd to admit that he spend most of his time at home, reading, taking care of his plants, cleaning. He had never considered himself an introvert… perhaps he wasn’t, he remembered how he had played outside all of his childhood. Perhaps he was just scared. “It definitely is, especially in comparison to Jakarta,” he said. “Uhm, I’ve yet to found my way around it, I am not much of an adventurer,” he admitted.

Bishanpal laughed and shook his head. “I mean… how can you enjoy this? It’s… so greasy,” he said, raising his nose at the food. “I’m going to order something else.” He took up the menu again. “A milkshake… salted caramel sounds nice.”

“Your first?” she repeats well before she can stop herself, looking him over from where she sits at the table. Truthfully, she can pick at the dishes Bishan makes all night if he’d let her – this food is too damn good to pass up. “Consider me honored for popping the Halloween cherry.” Albeit a crude joke, she smiles with her mouth full before swallowing. “We… usually hosted a Hallow’s Eve gala like a bunch of wet blankets and no one would dress up. I always wanted to be something obnoxious, like a dinosaur wrangler or the Wicked Witch of the West.”

Bishanpal nodded, not much surprised by her reaction. He got it often now, especially because it was a small town and he really couldn't’ hold the questions back when in public, it was right now, his most effective way of getting some social interaction with people. Because a lot of people loved to talk about Halloween, especially younger kids, they enjoyed telling him about their costumes. Bishanpal chuckled at the joke, only Theo could make such jokes and they would actually sound funny, perhaps it was the way she said it. “A dinosaur wrangler? Not a dinosaur?” he asked, throwing the dishes into the dishwasher and the pans in the sink. He would do the actual cleaning later, it was a calming experience that he didn’t want other people to see. Though things were different with Theo. He felt less likely to hide the things he didn’t want people to see: a messy kitchen, the actual cooking process, a house that wasn’t cleaned right before anyone got there. Though he still wore clothes that most people couldn’t afford and ensure he looked ready to receive guests at any moment, just in case. “I thought for Halloween you had to be something scary?”

He smiled a moment at them. “it’s good stuff there are more I am sure I don’t remember it all but I’ll call my parents sometime to ask them to send me some” he nodded “There is stores in New York that are like Russian food stores and they have everything” he smiled. “I think you should I’d be down to try it all”

“Ah, that’s probably smart,” he said. “To ask family.” Though Bishanpal could be certain his mother might just let her secretary send some just to amuse him, but not really engage with why he wanted to have the candy. It would be easier to call her secretary directly instead. “How far is New York from here?” he asked. He could make it a day trip if it wasn’t that far. But the USA was huge.

In the past, blind dates had never gone well for Thea. Or rather, they’d never ended well for her. So to have become friends with her latest one, not to mention working on pumpkins for a jack-o-lantern competition with him…it was an interesting development to be sure. At the moment though, her concentration was torn from the pumpkin to the male next her’s injury. A soft chuckle fell from her lips as she nodded, reaching for the bandage. “Sure B, can’t have your hands looking like Jigsaw’s face. Right?” Thea joked, flashing him a playful smirk. “Also for future reference…the sharp edge is only supposed to cut the pumpkin. Not you.” She couldn’t help but tease her friend.

Bishanpal offered his hand to Thea and shook his head. “Jigsaw is the one from Saw, right?” he asked, having now - since he had the time - been watching horror movies that were on some list he found for Halloween. He found most of them a bit too gorey or too much in general, and others he had fallen asleep to - after all the list did mention to watch them at night. “Oh, yes, thank you, I completely missed that,” Bishanpal said with a laugh. “Maybe if I smear some blood on it, it will be better,” he suggested.

Bishanpal took another bandage from his back pocket and grinned at Thea as he moved the knife away from his reach, the cut hurt, but he wasn’t new to it, this was his third attempt at a jack-o-lantern, but this time it was for a competition. And his new friend slash recent blind date was sitting right next to him, after he had totally presented himself as some kind of five-star chef. “Alright, can you help me with this? I think I got a cut on my other hand too.”

“Um… firstly, I wouldn’t think it’s weird. But I’m also no expert.” They hummed, an amused smile on their features. “Like most things, it was a European thing that Americans stole. I think.” Brow furrowed slightly, Layla realising that maybe she didn’t know as much about Halloween as she thought.

Bishanpal nodded, though he wouldn’t know what to call himself if she wasn’t an expert. “It was? That’s interesting, I thought that was just Christmas and New Years,” he said. “I really want to look it up now. And this whole trick-n-treat’ing... everyone does that?”

“Well, it depends on what kinds of things you enjoy.” Aly mused, shrugging casually. “If you’re hungry, Little Goat Diner is probably my favorite place. Or if you’re into art, then there’s Gallery 115. They usually have some cool stuff.” Mostly stuff that was out of Aly’s price range, but she’d gotten a painting from there once.

“What kind of food does Little Goat Dinner have?” Bishanpal asked, looking back to the road, but there was still no sign of escape. “Art sounds nice, is it like a museum? Or can you buy things there too?” He was asking perhaps too many questions, but he had time to kill and a town to get to know. “What... what do you do for amusement?” he asked.

He looked over at them for a moment and at the candies “I’m not to sure” he admitted. “I don’t really remember Russia much…” but they did have a few from Russia that were the top things so it was ones he knew. “this is pretty much a kit kat bar” he held it up and read what it said in Russian. “but it’s made with other things and berries..” he smiled. 

Bishanpal smiled and accepted the bar. “I’ve never seen it before,” he said, though he knew he was going to buy it, if anything, he loved trying new things. “I don’t see anything here from Indonesia, perhaps I should have some fly in... probably still enough time.”

Bishanpal leaned back in the chair at the library, watching the local computer start another session of loading a webpage far too slowly, and he started to poke the spider that hung over the computer. It was a huge thing, though he wasn’t surprised by it. Indonesia had made technical advances only recently. The computer started to go through another loading screen, then another, and then the screen gave some coded erros. He looked horrified, turning around to locate some other people, hoping someone understood software, since he didn’t think his robotics skills were useful in this play. “Uhm, say, I think it’s too early in October to be haunted by ghosts of technology, do you know what this thing is trying to tell me?” ( @zakeklund​ )

Bishanpal made a face at all the halloween decorations hanging around, still new to it, not really understanding where it had all come from. “So, if I ask you about the origins of Halloween? Will you tell me or find me very weird for not knowing it?” He asked. ( @layla-chen​ )

“What’s your favourite kind of sweet?” Bishanpal asked, standing in the candy store next to Brighton. “Anything from Russia that is good?” He asked then, sampling something that was standing before him. ( @brightonnature​ )

“So, this is my first time ever celebrating Halloween,” he admitted. Stacking the dishes at his house, his belly full and the task of cleaning the kitchen awaiting for him. He placed a new plate of laddu on the table and gestured for Theo to have some if she was still hungry. “It wasn’t really a thing in Jakarta when I was younger. Meaning, you’ll have to tell me everything. I cut my hand open on a pumpkin yesterday already,” he admitted, showing Theo the bandage below his right thumb. ( @theomccrae​ )

​“I tried to carve a pumpkin, but in the end it looked like a hot mess, so I made some soup instead, want to try it?” He held out the tupperware of soup to Max, who he recognised, but couldn’t place. They must’ve met each other in the town, he guessed.
