It’s called “environmental amnesia” and it’s an actual issue environmentalists discuss how to combat. The climate crisis makes it more widespread but it’s been something that’s happening for generations. The story of The Lorax describes it beautifully. The idea that what you remember is what you consider normal, but if the changes happen slowly over generations, you don’t see how large they are because you don’t personally remember them being very different, even if you were told stories about it.

For those of you who haven’t been keeping up.

The Navy spilled 14,000 gallons of fuel into the water on O’ahu. They said nothing for a whole week, and only admitted error when the residents on the military base started getting sick.

The spill contains petroleum, which is linked to a multitude of long term issues. Currently, residents are complaining of nausea, burning skin and headaches.

A well on the island is being shut off because it borrows from the military water supply. This well provides over 20% of the water on the island. Residents are being told to ration water, and no one is sure if the entire water supply is contaminated. We have no answers, no solutions, except wait for symptoms and pray you don’t fall ill.

we as a society need to accept that the desensitization to gore and things that relate to "shock factor" are neither healthy nor funny.

watching people dying for your own gratification or satisfaction, whether it be morbid or genuine curiosity, or because you like it, is not okay. seeing other people die violently is not a normal thing. desensitizing yourself and making jokes on their matters is not only disrespectful, but harmful to yourself. a living being died and lost their life. using their pain for your interest is disgusting.

wondering about death and finding curiosity in it, especially as a person who has experienced the loss of someone in order to grieve, is natural. but... wanting to look at videos of people torn apart or taking their own lives? that's essentially self harm.

this isn't a healthy interest. it cannot be healthy. imagine how much it hurts to be someone who cared about the person or being that died, and seeing the act of it gaining traction. how heart wrenching would that be? how disgusted would you be?

this isn't a matter of nature or the way that life is. you need help.

Lean your head forward, preferably to knee level, and let the water kind of drain out of your mouth. When your are able to, take deep slow breaths. No heimlich maneuver or physical assists from somebody else should be used beyond this, otherwise you could vomit and escalate the issue. Its about keeping the larynx open. Hopefully this helps.
