A child runs past you into the thick crowd gathered in the city’s central square, free from worry and giddy with excitement for the colorful festival taking place. On such a happy, warm island it’s difficult to imagine any dangers existing — not in the crystal blue sea, the white sand dunes, and the temperate, tropical forest that lies between the ocean and the city. But if there is one cliche that proves true, it is never to judge a book by its cover; even those new to the island known of the two organizations that run amuck, and the long-standing feud between them.
You look to the west, towards the section of the city that waves the sun goodbye as it drops over the horizon — there you see splashes of color. Red, vermilion, crimson — all shades of the color are everywhere, hung from banisters and billboards with a certain pride. This is the territory of the Roseus, an organized criminal group known not only for their ostentatious pride but for the distribution of their counterfeit currency and lead by the elusive Sanguine Queen. Their insignia is red and gold.
Then you look to the east, towards the part of the city that greets the night first — blue and silver are the colors of the Caeruleus, and of their boss, the mysterious Icy Empress, and it shows in the decor most prominently decorating the streets. While they are not as showy as the Roseus, their reservation is not any less deadly. Their specialty lies in the smuggling of goods and services, including expensive luxury items and rare medicinal cures.
Then you notice splashes of purple and bronze staunch against the bold colors. This is a silent protest against the two feuding sides, you are told, a sign of the police and the people who refuse to associate with both mafia families. They’re referred to as the Amethystinus with much disdain — after all, who would be so bold as to stand against the Roseus and Caeruleus? These people rally beneath the mayor and chief of police, but they are the minority in this city in reality.
You may have lived on the island all your life and proudly associate with one group or the other. Perhaps your family has been members of the Roseus for generations, or maybe when you enrolled in high school you chose the life of a Caeruleus member — there are benefits to joining, after all. Both families pay for education and medical procedures, and there are discounts and perks in the shops and businesses that align themselves with the two warring groups.
— Of course there’s the little matter of the turf war going on, but perhaps you sit in the underground base and examine data all day, or just run errands up and down the hallways between the more prominent members. Or maybe you like the excitement, you train daily and involve yourself in gun fights. Maybe you’re a tempter or temptress and specialize in covert operations to gather information — or maybe you are an Amethystinus sympathizer and just want to live a normal life without the constant threat of violence over your head, or you bank on the need for intelligence and sell yourself out to both sides in a dangerous game of survival.
There are many paths you could could take in this corrupt city. New or old resident alike, we welcome you to Iridis Island and to Prisma City. May you live to see another day, and may you find the color that defines you.
