The feeling that radiated through her body as he wiped the tears from her cheeks was something she hadn't felt in years. The warmth it created grew from her cheeks down into her toes, and if she hadn't been so on guard, Matilda would've visibly shivered. Haruki had this effect on her every time, and before she had found safety in it, but now she worried as the feeling diffused. Because even though he said he didn't hate her, she still couldn't help but feel that maybe he was just in shock. That once it died down, he would be upset.
For the last five years, Matilda had made a habit of beating herself up for leaving them. Always wanting to run back to the cozy home they shared at the compound, but then she remembered the leader's face, the way he looked at her with so much animosity and fury, causing her to wipe the idea away as quickly as she had the thought. It stopped her every time, and yet here Haruki was, standing right in front of her as if it were the first day they met. He had been brave and made the choice to reunite, something she was far too afraid to accomplish.
Placing a soft kiss on his knuckles, she took his hand in hers and led him to where she lived. Right above the gym was a very small apartment, one she had done her best to make feel like home, but it never did. Matilda knew it wouldn't feel that way until she had the two people she considered her only solace in view, and now they were here. Once Haruki and she stepped foot in the doorway, it felt as if the room had brightened, and it made her heart leap out of her chest.
"I started living here a few years ago, when the owner of the gym had gotten too old to take care of the place. It never felt like home, though. Nothing has felt complete since I ran." Her voice was trembling at the last part. "The two of you have never left me. I feel you both all the time." She remembered breastfeeding Olive, the satisfaction of getting her to latch so quickly, and the sleepy noises she made as she suckled. She remembered how Haruki felt, too, the way his hands always found her hips when he entered the room. All of these phantom feelings haunted her every move.
Closing the door behind them, she then made her way to the kitchen area, taking some glasses out of the cabinet and pouring them both some water. When she turned to face him again, she couldn't help but ask. "Is it over? Did the group finally fall apart? How are you here?" The questions spilled out of her at a fast pace, causing her eyes to widen and her heartbeat to quicken.
Despite wanting the answers, she was also terrified of what it would lead to.
