im really sorry, i should not have said that. i didn't know it was a cultural thing, and a couple of hours ago i was 100% sure it was specific to poland (where i live & where my parents pierced my ears when i was 1), and made this poll to see if maybe i was wrong (i was, massively). i do now know that this is a cultural practice and sadly i can't edit a poll so i deleted the original post & clarified why in the replies

Had a bit of a rant this morning. Gender is a construct and biology is a joke. Trans lives matter.
“You don’t care what my biology is or what gender I am. You care that I’m not performing femininity to your standards.”
That’s a fantastic way of putting it. It reminds me of that 2016 news story from 2016 of a woman, assigned female at birth, who was forced out of a women’s restroom by 3 male cops. She didn’t present as feminine in her baggy Men’s section clothes, short hair, and backwards baseball cap and that was enough “proof” to call the cops and drag her off.
This is why TERF ideology is so self-destructive. TERF’s claim they’re “pro-women, pro-female empowerment, pro-keeping women safe” but put into practice, it harms AFAB women as well as trans women. When women are told “you should conform more to patriarchal beauty standards or you deserve harassment”, forced to present their ID (containing their home address) to “prove” their gender, when the women’s restroom fills with male cops to drag out someone for being suspiciously androgynous.
That isn’t Feminist at all! It’s an anti-woman stance.

Yeah. I listened to a self-identified Black butch lesbian talk about how a white woman called the police on her for being in the bathroom and the white male officer asked to feel her chest to “prove” she was a woman.
The Black butch - cis - lesbian was giving this talk at an anti-bathroom bill rally by the way. She was revealing this horrible story to the audience to make them understand what transphobia really is, and really does. And yes it is related to racism.

We gotta remember that what we’re fundamentally talking about, with binary/sexist gender, is a system of social control. The interest in controlling people’s social positions and roles based on sex is absolutely tied to racism, because race is a caste system, and policing gender is necessary to the maintenance of a caste system.
I think in a whole lotta cases, TERFs arrive at the positions they do by tacitly realizing they benefit from that caste system, and normalizing that as a natural entitlement instead of a wholly artificial system. Racism has always sold itself as being about “protecting white women,” and that does not become more racially neutral just because the word “white” is removed. In practice it still means “protect white women,” because white feminism largely ignores the impacts of racism on Black women’s lives.
Cops to actually come out and physically remove trans people from bathrooms don’t just exist independently of racism. The unspoken presumption from TERFs that there *should* be cops to come and remove anyone making them uncomfortable, only comes about because cis, straight, white womanhood has long, long been held up as what racist systems were defending.
This isn’t an implicit connection I’m just drawing on my own, either: white supremacists heavily feature white women and children in their propaganda, invoke the honor of white women at trial to justify terrorism and hate crimes [and not only get off, but sometimes get *cheers* from white folks in the courtroom]. White women as a golden goose to be defended have always, ALWAYS been a key component in racism. And TERFs are just like “No but we want the protection, actually,” thinking they can just exorcise the whole history of the concept.
