Summary:

An uncertain knock comes this time, making Buck realize he’s still pressing both hands against it. Still gritting teeth and frowning hard.

“Mr. Barnes?”

“Who the hell are you?” Bucky calls back.

“John Walker,” The man calls back, pausing before continuing, “I came to pick you up?”

The brunette doesn’t budge from his place holding the door shut as though someone was trying to break it down. He doesn’t say a word, staring at the faint lines of grain down the door as he tries to exhale calmer.

“For the apartment? Uh— I’m the guy they assigned to monitor you?” The unsure voice continues.

the concept ain't new but chef's kiss for everyone who has written, is in the process of writing or plans to write their version of established winteragent with Steve returning and bringing out John's self-worth issues full force so he pulls away from Bucky before Bucky can realize that John was only ever an unworthy placeholder for Steve and now that the real thing is back John is useless and Bucky is so emotionally stunted he doesn’t understand what is happening and there's 50k of John angst and Bucky worrying Steve and the rest of the Thunderbolts realizing John Walker Needs A Hug (Marvel)

Six months into their relationship, and Walker is still asking the dumbest questions possible. Bucky complains, but he always answers. And when he comes back to John, he makes it very clear that he’s not going to give up on what they’ve managed to build together.
