As with all german actors in the 30's, you always gotta check the World War II section of their Wikipedia page. Well im happy to report that Marlene Dietrich was in open opposition to the Nazi regime, and in 1937 donated her entire salary for a film (over 9 million dollars in todays money) to helping Jewish refugees :)

i hate this post circulating so much because it’s disinformation. not the addition of marlene’s contributions to jewish refugees, that part is true, but the first part of her being arrested for cross dressing. that picture is not of her being arrested or detained. she’s quite simply just getting off the train with her entourage (that’s her husband on her left!). she was never arrested for cross dressing, which didn’t really happen to women at this time in France. it was technically illegal except under special circumstances, but the law was already over a century old and not enforced by this time (technically it still exists, but it’s one of those dead, unenforceable ordinances that was just never formally stricken down).

despite not being detained, these pictures did circulate in the news and marlene was mocked for her androgyny, as you can see in this newspaper photo that circulated of a male porter greeting her while wearing a skirt, trying to make her look silly and failing because she’s still serving absolute cunt. but it wasn’t like everyone was mocking her. marlene was still generally pretty beloved by the public and cool as fuck.
