I’ve been holding on to this for a while. In… September? I was having a Really Bad Time. So I ended up making this comic to sort of… sort through some stuff. It really helped.
I hope maybe it can resonate with other people, too.
Reblogs would be very appreciated, so more people can see it <3
Burnout, 2018.
Three years ago, my constantly worsening sleep deprivation and stress resulted in a burnout. I’m 30 years old now, at the time of posting this comic, and I still haven’t recovered fully. I still have the heart symptoms - even the smallest amount of stress brings the symptoms back. It’s likely I will never recover enough to work a fulltime job again and I can’t go back to high-stress environments like customer service. But that’s alright. I am more than just my work. I’m slowly learning to be merciful towards myself and to show myself the same kindness I show others, and I think that’s very important.
This is my story and I won’t be ashamed any more.
Do Not
Do not complain.
Do not be apathetic.
They said.
You should not complain.
You should not talk about the bad things.
They said.
Just live.
Just live.
Just live.
As if they have that much audacity to be in control of my life.
You can not think about giving up.
You can not just stop trying.
They said.
As if they put those words as mental support.
This life is mine, what else do i have?
If i decide to stop and give up, because i am not strong anymore, who are they to tell me to hold on?
Can you keep telling a wounded soldier to go to war, while she's thinking that death is the only peace?
You're all too naively egoistic.
To look life from your angle, you keep forcing your perspective on me.

In the end there doesn’t have to be anyone who understands you. There just has to be someone who wants to.
Robert Brault (via thequotejournals)
Most of my life has been spent trying to shrink myself. Trying to become smaller. Quieter. Less sensitive. Less opinionated. Less needy. Less me. Because I didn’t want to be a burden. I didn’t want to be too much or push people away. I wanted people to like me. I wanted to be cared for and valued. I wanted to be wanted. So for years, I sacrificed myself for the sake of making other people happy. And for years, I suffered. But I’m tired of suffering, and I’m done shrinking. It’s not my job to change who I am in order to become someone else’s idea of a worthwhile human being. I am worthwhile. Not because other people think I am, but because I exist, and therefore I matter. My thoughts matter. My feelings matter. My voice matters. And with or without anyone’s permission or approval, I will continue to be who I am and speak my truth. Even if it makes people angry. Even if it makes them uncomfortable. Even if they choose to leave. I refuse to shrink. I choose to take up space. I choose to honour my feelings. I choose to give myself permission to get my needs met. I choose to make self-care a priority. I choose me.

Savage.
Some people are uncomfortable with silences. Not me. I’ve never cared much for call and response. Sometimes I will think of something to say and then I ask myself: is it worth it? And it just isn’t.
Miranda July, No One Belongs Here More Than You (via wordsnquotes)
Huh?
GOALS.
The problem with the positive fantasies is that they allow us anticipate success in the here and now. However, they don’t alert us to the problems we are likely to face along the way and can leave us with less motivation. After all, it feels like we’ve already reached our goal.
It’s one way in which our minds own brilliance lets us down. Because it’s so amazing at simulating our achievement of future events, it can actually undermine our attempts to achieve those goals in reality.
Our poor brain is thus a victim of itself.
Again, this is not to say that visualizing goals is necessarily a haphazard strategy for achieving them, it’s just that we need to be aware of the dangers of excessive fantasy.
Instead of being entranced with what the future may bring, we need to learn to love the work here and now.
Enjoying our day by day progress and realistic “checkpoints” is much more pratical way to create our future; getting lost in grandiose dreams that focus on the ultimate is not.
As they say, don’t give up on your dreams, but don’t fall under their spell either.
So remember to include an “If-Then” plan for your next big goal, you’ll be able to beat back your brain’s guilt over slipping up now and then and you won’t have to ever “wing it” in case something goes wrong!
To me, being an intellectual doesn’t mean knowing about intellectual issues; it means taking pleasure in them.

I began to understand that suffering and disappointments and melancholy are there not to vex us or cheapen us or deprive us of our dignity but to mature and transfigure us.

I am both worse and better than you thought.
