something i think a lot of pro censorship people in fandom don't think about when they agrue for the criminalization and subsequent prosecution of "problematic" fiction is that if they were to get what they want, victims of real world violence would suffer as a result due to resources now being taken away from them
child abuse survivors (including sexual abuse) would suffer because because rather then having child abuse investigators solely looking into real, genuine abuse of real children, some portion of those investigators will now how to look into fictional depictions of abuse. this means less actual abuse cases where real children are being abused can be investigated and dealt with because there are now less resources dedicated to them
rape survivors would suffer because rather then having investigators solely looking into real, genuine cases of real people being raped, some portion of those investigators will now have to look into fictional depictions of rape. this means less actual cases where real people are being raped can be investigated and dealt with because there are now less resources dedicated to them
and this goes for any dynamic in fiction that would be toxic and/or illegal in real life. resources that could go towards helping real people escape from abuse would now be divided towards punishing people for fictional depictions of abuse and helping them, and less resources means less reach, means less people saved
it also places fictional depictions on the same level of harm as actual abuse. it places children who have suffered into the same category of an object being written about in a "gross" way
and even if they're were new divisions made to investigate and prosecute fictional depictions of crimes, those are still resources that could have instead been focused on real crimes, resources that could save people from abuse that are instead being used just to punish people for making fiction
and i use the word punish because that's what it is. criminalizing fiction saves no one, protects no one, all it does is punish people for doing something that causes no inherent harm purely on a basis of disgust
censoring underage fiction or age gap fiction or whatever other "problematic" types of fiction would do absolutely nothing to stop grooming, it would not result in even one less victim, because fiction is not the cause of abuse. abusers are the cause of abuse, and the lack of education on how to stop and get away from abusers allows for an environment where abusers can get away with it
it is like trying to ban low cut shirts and short skirts to prevent rape, it's never been about the clothes. it's never been about the fiction
abusers, and specifically groomers in this case, may use fiction as a tool, but they can and will use anything as a tool. banning fiction will just make them use a different tool, be it my little pony or hot wheels or chocolate cake, it will do nothing to stop them
education is what stops groomers, not censorship. teaching youths what grooming is and what it looks like it what stops grooming from happening because it makes ALL their tools useless if their victim know how to notice when they use them
and this isn't even talking about how victims who cope with their experiences and/or trauma with fiction would suffer if fiction was criminalized, how so many victims just trying to live and cope would end up with huge fines and/or prison time and a criminal record for doing something that helps them and doesn't inherently hurt anyone, because they coped in a way that is "gross"
censorship will only hurt the people they claim they want to protect, yet so many people advocate for it anyway
