I can’t overstate how wholeheartedly he threw himself into the rhythm and inflection of real people words. He would pause for emphasis and then look up at me to see what I thought, raising his voice inquisitively or making impassioned declarations. Absolutely incomprehensible but he was doing a phenomenal impression of human language and conversational tone.

Every night you dream that you talk to a genie, when you wake up you can't remember what you wished for. One morning you wake up with a giant crab pincer replacing your right arm. What do you do?

You think for a second, what COULD you do? Open all the cans, attract a mate like a fiddler crab (probably wont work out too well), maybe you could go on a rampage like yet another animal themed spiderman villain? No you must use this new found appendage for good, of course you join the fire department, and they are so glad you did, with your claw you are able to do the job of the jaws of life without the extra tool. You are welcomed as a hero and though this may just be making the best of an odd situation it could tunr into your destiny.

This was peak driver ergonomics. 3 Knobs for HVAC. How hot, How Hard, and where do you want it? RAdio is just below windshield level. Headlight switch is big and easily reached by feel alone. Buttons are large, and each one textured differently. You could operate everything without taking your eyes off the road.

Touch buttons on anything are a plague on humanity. There's no advantage, it's just tech bros fellating themselves. It just makes it way easier to press a button by accident.

Wayne Barlowe (1979)

This book, Barlowe’s Guide to Extraterrestials, is out of print. That’s probably because almost all of the aliens depicted are from classic sci-fi stories, and it would cost a lot to renew all the licenses decades on. I had to locate my own copy through a used book store.

Many are the only official depictions of these aliens, and the Mesklinite in particular has always seemed like something that could terrify me at any size. Like, if that were an inch long and crawled out from under my desk, I’d still run away screaming.

You might also recognize Barlowe’s work on monsters in Guillermo Del Toro movies, and I personally also recommend Barlowe’s totally awesome art depicting demons, which he still makes today.
