Valentino is reopening Studio 54 for their latest collection launch—and while the clothes will no doubt sparkle, I can’t help but wonder: can magic like Studio 54’s even exist when every guest is holding an iPhone?

In the late ’70s, Studio 54 was pure chaos and glamour. Diana Ross on the dance floor. Grace Jones descending from the ceiling. Andy Warhol and Bianca Jagger sipping champagne at 4 a.m. What made it legendary wasn’t just who was there—it was what wasn’t there. No phones. No endless scrolling proof. No feeds to curate. You either lived the night, or you missed it.

Fast forward to today: every party is content. The velvet rope isn’t about mystery anymore—it’s a backdrop for Instagram stories. We’ve traded rumor for repost. Even when fashion brands try to channel that golden age of nightlife, it ends up feeling less like a secret society and more like a branded experience with a hashtag attached.

So what happens when Valentino brings Studio 54 back to life? Will guests actually dance, or will they just film themselves dancing? Will anyone be bold enough to live off-camera? Can fashion still create a moment that isn’t immediately flattened into pixels?

On September 30, 2024—coincidentally what would have been Virgil Abloh’s 44th birthday—LVMH quietly announced the sale of Off‑White to Bluestar Alliance. It marked the culmination of a shift that began in 2021 when LVMH had taken a majority stake in the brand, only to struggle in reconnecting it to Abloh’s cultural ethos. Now in the hands of a brand-management firm known more for licensing than luxury, Off‑White stands at a crossroads: will it retain its disruptive prestige or risk becoming another name on the licensing carousel?”

Let’s face it, the sale of Off‑White to Bluestar Alliance is more than just a business deal—it’s a reflection of fashion’s uneasy relationship with Black creativity. Virgil Abloh wasn’t just any designer. He was the first Black artistic director at Louis Vuitton Menswear, and one of the few Black designers to helm a major fashion house or own a globally recognized brand in the luxury space. Off‑White wasn’t just a brand—it was a cultural disruptor rooted in Black streetwear, youth culture, and redefined masculinity through a luxury lens.

It raises an urgent question:
