“this ship is not canon” babe, they’re fictional characters. they’re not real. they’re literally dolls we play with. we don’t care about whether or not these fictional characters’ love story is canon in this piece of media that is also entirely based on fiction. I mean, sure, canon would be lovely, but it’s a bonus. it’s not necessary. what we care about is the fun of talking about these 2 idiots being in love.
we don’t give a fuck if they didn’t kiss in “canon”. they had raw sex in thousands of fics about them though. and I’d say that’s more than enough to make people who ship them happily ship them even harder. happy shipping!

Honestly antis try so hard to be unproblematic that they end up being more problematic than they would be if they just admitted they liked a morally questionable character
I’ve seen people like characters who have sexually harassed other characters in the past and what do they do? Do they admit that the character has committed actions that are reprehensible but they don’t endorse it irl and are able to enjoy the character even if they don’t agree with their actions?
Nah, they will claim that actually it wasn’t abuse at all and the harassed character is actually an asshole who needs to be shat on much more than the character that they like
An attitude not unlike that person who finds out their friend has assaulted someone and goes “but they’re so nice, they would never do that!”
This is because antis see morality as black and white.
In their heads, if someone takes an immoral action, it's because they are categorically and existentially a "bad person."
Therefore if someone is categorized as a "good person" to them, they have to jump through hoops to make sure they can see any action they take as a "moral action."
Because if they acknowledge that the person took an immoral action, then that person must be categorically and existentially a bad person!
Whereas you and I can understand moral nuance enough to understand that sometimes a good person takes an immoral action, or a bad person will do things that are moral/good for the community.
I used to think purity culture would be one dimensional and easy to spot, but the more I have to grapple with it in my day-to-day fandom life, the more *confused* it is. Purity culture doesn't seem to actually have a coherent ethos beyond uncomfortable=morally wrong. Which might be common sense for a lot of people, but the major complication is the inconsistency between each moralist. Many people will jump through hoops to defend the thing they like while also shaming others over their things. It's very "pick-me" energy. Their interests must be okay *because they enjoy it*, even and especially if other moralists find it gross or upsetting. I'm genuinely surprised there isn't more infighting. They should have all eaten themselves by now
You hit the nail on the head.
You put ten different antis in a room and you will have 11 different definitions of "proship."
They each base what is "immoral" on what's personally uncomfortable to them, and no two antis draw the line in the same place.
This is why they can't effectively build community outside of attacking people. And why they so often end up attacking one another.
