seriously, teenagers are the absolute hardest group to engage at most libraries & we'll often organize programs that absolutely no one will show up to & it sucks. if you go up to a public librarian & say "hey, some friends & i want to do this thing. does that sound like a feasible teen program for the library?" most people will move heaven & earth to pull it off for you because we know there's an interest in our community. we will go balls to the freaking wall to make it happen

do you want a cosplay contest? a video game tournament? a free escape room? bring it up to the library. it's not a burden or an annoyance at all. it'll be like christmas came early for us

There's a small farming town a few hours from me. It's known for a pumpkin patch/corn maze, but that's about it. There's not enough demand for any type of convention, let alone a hotel big enough to host one.

BUT! They have a library. And the library hosts a mini comic con each year. It's small, but they have an artists alley and some panels and a cosplay contest.

If you're in a place that can't have conventions, ask your library!

I am once again begging people to realize that AI checker doesn’t work. it’s never worked. it’s notoriously known to have flagged human-made works as AI and AI-generated works as human-made. and by feeding it people’s works, you are feeding more works to AI, because apparently the machine itself is AI.

the only thing AI checker does is harm genuine artists and people in general too.

There’s actually a few things here that majorly dropped childhood mortality. In no particular order these include…

The invention of antibiotics! The first sulfa drugs dropped in the 1930s-40s

Widespread access and distribution of enriched food products! Enriched flour did a lot to prevent malnutrition, and it’s how Wonderbread got its name!

We got a hell of a lot better with medical care for sick and premature infants. The first incubators for premature babies were actually used as something of a sideshow attraction at Coney Island! It was the only way the doctor who invented them could get funding to keep them running because no one thought it would work. It showed a lot of people that really premature babies could survive with the right treatment and eventually was adopted by hospitals.

The green revolution in agriculture that prevented around a billion people from starving to death

More recently it’s been widespread access to mosquito nets and medication to poorer and rural areas

This may sound preachy, but if you’re in your teens or 20s please take care to develop the habit of speaking positively about people behind their backs. Gossip is unavoidable, and yes it does allow people to bond, and yes some people deserve to be shit talked. But I think being negative about things is literally just nature, whereas trying to be positive about things and people is a quality you have to be very intentional about . If this does not apply to you, good for you. But for most people I think it does. Im not lauding toxic positivity so much as saying that if there’s space to speak positively about someone behind their back, it’s better to take that route.

plus a lot of the time, talking about a person when they're not there still can get back to them. and hearing the nice things people say about you when you're not around? that can change someone's whole day. hell, once i heard a coworker i barely talk to considers me one of the most reliable people to go to for questions because i'm good at answering them in a way that makes sense. i've been riding that high for months.

Also, you know the thing about "a system is good at what it measures" and the other thing that's like "the function of a system is what it does"?

When you speak well of people, you train yourself to see the good in others, and therefore it's easier to see that good and to see more of it. It just makes the world better and easier to bear.

things I think ao3 should implement

1. Being able to search through history/marked for later, with the filtering system (instead of having to go through every page of history/marked for later in order to find what you’re looking for)

2. Being able to see which fics you’ve kudosed

3. See word counts for each chapter

4. Be able to sort bookmarks with the same filters as the filtering system (as in: creator, title, hits, kudos, comments, bookmarks)

more ideas from my reblogs

1. Being able to filter a ship by "main" or "side", instead of getting fics with it mainly as a side ship (especially good for rare-pairs)

2. Clarifying further (on the kudos one): only you can see which fics you've kudosed

3. Being able to see comment history (your own, not anybody else's)

4. A requirement of series fics to specify whether they are continuous (they all follow the same plot line, as if they were chapters in a long-fic) or just related in some way (by fandom or ship or main character, etc)

5. Bookmarks folders (you can add certain bookmarks to a folder, to view only those specific ones. Also, you can stilli search through all bookmarks and those in folders will show up)

6. Being able to filter your subscribed fics

7. Being able to save a set of tags that you always want included, or save a set of tags that you always want excluded, so you can just quickly add them in instead of manually typing them all out every time

8. Be able to schedule chapter releases to post automatically on a work

9. Being able to block specific works (it won't block the author, and would be able to work on anonymous w too)

10. Being able to filter subscriptions

I'd just like to add, that none of my suggestions (including the ones other people mentioned) are in any way trying to turn ao3 into a social media site, since some people think that's what l'm trying to do. These are just ideas I and other people have come up with, that we think are ways to improve certain aspects of ao3. And once again, these are just suggestions, not a demand. Would it be cool to see these implemented? Yeah, but I'm not going to beg on my knees for this, because some of these might not be doable.

I don't run ao3, I'm not a person who works on improving the site, I'm just a fan without any control over it (I know ao3 is also run by fans, but l'm saying I'm not in charge of the site in the way the creators are).

So please, stop getting mad at me for a simple post.
