now, idk how y'all get down, but for me, inappropriate sexual comments are just not cool at all. i don't care who you are, or what you know--that's sexual harassment. and i am definitely not going to defend/excuse/ignore that behavior if i know someone engaging in it. like, this is supposed to be a space to talk language and/or linguistics. if y'all are gonna display creepy behavior or (in)directly enable it, then yeah, step off the platform.

i'm too old to be seeing that type of mess (and i'm not old!), and i'm not interested in having my younger followers potentially get caught up in stuff because * I * failed to hold my boundaries.

so, just a psa that 1) i'm wholly disinterested in playing "who said what", 2) i don't care--if it's wrong, it's wrong, and 3) once i'm aware, y'all are not about to see x person on your dashboard from ME.

if you make content (not necessarily 'study related'--i'm in social science so current issues/personal reflections) and are marginalized (via race/disability/orientation/gender/etc) ... will definitely be looking out for that on my new blog bc i would like to have other mutuals who make original content too (i likely wont be a heavy reblog-blr this time around, no tracking tags or anything)--the next blog will be even more discussion-focused :-]

so just to clarify .. my content going forward [on https://farwestlinguist.tumblr.com/] still gon be black, still gon be inclusive, still gon be accessible ... all of that ! i've been working more on the sociology side of my studies since defending my thesis, and i'm really trying to grow my knowledge in different realms beyond racial contexts, like disability rights, how that applies to language, things of that nature. so i want my work going forward to reflect what i've been learning, and what i will continue to learn :-]

it will take more time, and will force me to sit down with these topics and put in the effort i need to--and i'm excited for that! a lot of blacklinguist has served as a shallow soundboard for me, but i want to expand on the ideas that have been brought up on here :-]

first i want to say that the past 3 years on this blog have been really enriching and fun for me; i've enjoyed the dialogues we've had on linguistics, language, and academia in general, and i want to continue them!

i do not feel that this specific blog is the place for that anymore, however. i started this blog in my last semester of undergrad as a stereotypical studyblr/langblr, but my interests and goals have changed quite a bit since then. the desire to start anew has been stirring for some time (contributing to me not being on here as much while I sorted that out).

y'all are probably like "bling you've said this already" and yes, i have ! a lot of things have changed for me this year offline that have influenced what i want my online presence to look like (and i want to talk about that a bit on my new blog so you know what my content is informed from) ! :-]

i anticipate getting my new blog up (as in, theme set, intro post, lil particulars like the books i'm reading) within the first two weeks of august, but i do have an empty link for anyone who wants to follow me over there -> https://farwestlinguist.tumblr.com/

was strongly considering moving off tumblr completely ... but i've realized a lot of my issues with what i was experiencing on here can be alleviated by leaving this blog. i will be keeping it up as an archive (and keeping the name on this blog), and will likely recreate the most important original content posts i've made, and put them on my new blog. :-]

omg ahhh !! i'm so happy to hear you're enjoying vanishing voices :) it's really a good start for deeper thinking regarding language and global communities, and a bit meatier than some of the dry linguistics facts we get. having those examples is so helpful and can take you down more paths!

i'm excited to share my new reads with y'all too ... i've really been doing a lot of thinking re: this blog , and what i want it to look like (or rather, what i want my outreach as a phd student to look like), and how that fits in with my presence here .... idk if i can give up just yet but i'll address that soon! :D

i need to set up a post for teaching while in grad school honestly . obviously i was on the masters' level but do you know i was never a grader ONCE for any of the six terms i taught lol T_T

LUCKILY did not have to set the course up from scratch (i just populated it w my specific files) but all the attendance, grading, and teaching was on me .... so a little bit more involved than i would have ever anticipated (especially bc 4/6 of those terms, i was teaching 40+ people at once)

so maybe i'll do that, bc a lot of what i read beforehand didn't prepare me as much as i had hoped

Just bouncing off that previous question, do you think South African English is something that can be appropriated? Since it’s kind of a mix of English, Afrikaans and many of the African languages we have here. They all somewhat intertwine. I was just curious of your thoughts :)

You'd have to look at the dynamics between people who speak it to gather what's going on.

I'm not as interested in linguistic appropriation as it seems to be (it just comes up a lot, haha). I'm more interested in the things people are saying within their own communities, rather than looking at the 'sharing'/'appropriating' split. I would defer to South Africans on that, I only know a bit of it from my black South African friend. :-]

*n im only saying im not as interested because i have no interest in being some wizard who says what is/isn't offensive to others. i don't think language use necessarily NEEDS to be deemed appropriative for it to be offensive to speakers when a non-speaker uses terms/phrases not coined by their group [definition of group intentionally left loose].

This Congolese guy living in South African messaged me, we were bantering and I thought he was from London, but nah. I heard Grime used to be big amongst Black South Africans, I don't know if it's true though. But I really thought this guy grew up in London
