BLACK HISTORY MOMENT: On this day, February 13th, 1923, The first Black professional basketball team "The Renaissance" organized in Harlem by Robert “Bob” Douglas. They were known to their many fans and admirers as "The Rens" and they've been called "the greatest basketball team you never heard of.” The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inducted the New York Renaissance collectively in 1963.

BLACK HISTORY FLASHBACK: By winning the Long Beach Open, Charlie Sifford became the first Black person to win a major professional golf tournament, November 10, 1957.
Charlie Sifford broke barriers all his life. He was the first African-American to play the PGA and the first to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. In 2004, Sifford became the first black golfer to break into another exclusive club. Of the 100 previously enshrined at the World Golf Hall of Fame, none was black. He was selected via the Lifetime Achievement category for his contributions to the game. "We honor a man not just for what he accomplished on the course, but for the course he chose in life," South African Gary Player said as he introduced his long-time friend at the induction ceremony in St. Augustine, Fla.
Better late, than never. That's been the story of Charlie Sifford's life. "Man, I'm in the Hall of Fame, the World Hall of Fame," he said in his induction ceremony speech. "Don't forget that now! I'm in the World Hall of Fame with all the players. That little old golf I played was all right, wasn't it?"
Mr. Sifford is 92 years young and currently resides in Charlotte, NC.

BLACK HISTORY FLASHBACK: Gordon Parks' film The Learning Tree is registered in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress (September 19, 1989). It joins other films such as Casablanca, Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz.
Gordon Parks was the first African-American photographer for Life Magazine, and later, the first African-American to direct a film for a major Hollywood studio. Check out his masterful photographs HERE
