BlackGirlNerd perpetuates misogynoir in fandom.

You may have seen a post today from blackgirlnerds talking about “crazy fandoms” particularly a group known as the Iris West Defense Squad. Unfortunately BGN does not support black female characters and when called out, she acted particularly petty. Namely never shutting up about it, going on a podcast to paint herself as the victim of bullying, and writing a hit piece with the goal of turning fans who protect black female characters into pariahs. Not only is she incapable of supporting black women TV characters, but she’s trying to get a come up by climbing on the backs of black women in real life, calling fans of Sleepy Hollow and Scandal uncivilized, which a huge micro aggression, if I’ve ever heard one. Every link in this post is a screenshot for proof. 

BGN and Misogynoir

BGN doesn’t actually praise black women on TV. (After she was called out on this, she started to praise Fish Mooney, but personally I think she’s using that as a guise.)

Iris West isn’t the only black women character that BGN finds beneath her. When asked about Abbie Mills being sidelined, she replied that she didn’t “See anything wrong” with what they were doing. In the past she has demeaned the Sleepy Hollow and Olivia Pope fandoms, although most of those tweets have been deleted.

There is also an article on her website claiming:

“[Diversity] can’t be shoe-horned in places where it doesn’t make sense" 

It goes on to speak out against Spiderman, Heimdall and Johnny Storm being portrayed by black actors. 

The “love” she claims to have to black people on television, especially black women on television is shallow and peripheral. This is far more evident when you learn, like I did, that BGN is a huge fan of Felicity Sm**k. She’s admonishing the Iris West fandom while Olic**y fans send death threats to actresses, death threats to an actor’s wife, and cheer on the erasure of Diggle. In fact, A**ow fans were encouraged by Olic**y fans not to support more screentime for Diggle… Because then, somehow, magically, it will be give Iris West more screen time on The Flash.

In case I lost you, Iris West fans defend characters and people against racial slurs, and threats of violence. Her fandom: Sends death threats and promotes the erasure of black characters.

BGN claims that she’s never seen the dark side of her fandom. But that’s hard to believe, because she’s friends with one of the people who specifically said not to speak out on Diggle’s erasure.

BGN would have you believe that she was offering constructive criticism when she was brutally ravaged by the Beyhive— I mean, Iris West Defense Squad.  She wasn’t. She was making pot shots on twitter. People came and disagreed with her. That’s it. Seriously, it is. Now apparently, when you disagree with BGN, she might reply once or twice, but after that she blocks you. There is no dissent allowed in BGNerdom. In fact for someone who claims she was rooting for her characters, BGN was surprised that Iris West even had fans. She portrayed the IWDS as a sort of shadowy monolith waiting in the darkest parts of twitter, waiting to victimize poor folks who share unpopular opinions.

Remember when she claimed she was open to civil disagreements? She isn’t.

Here are the tweets that BGN is referencing when she claims that’s she’s been bullied. She claimed not to post them to respect anonymity, but the truth is that no one was bullying her. In fact the last three, they were specifically speaking out abuse from fandoms.

Meanwhile here are the things that the IWDS fights against.

The fact is that BGN is painting the IWDS with a brush that racists and people who propagate misogynoir has used against black women for an eternity: They are Angry Black Girls. This isn’t true of course. Their go to when encountering Iris hate is simply asking why.

Whois The Iris West Defense Squad?

Thefirst evidence I have of anyone in the Iris West fandom makingcontact with BlackGirlNerds was 2 weeks ago, when a twitter user asked BGN if she’d be interested in highlighting Iris West and talk about the difficulties that particular character experienced. Most of which is Misogynoir. There was no response from BGN.

A week later, Bustle a social media and lifstyle website, published an article by Angelica Bastien with a section dedicated racism in the Flash Fandom. It introduced the Iris West Defense Squad, a team of WoC, mostly black, dedicated to defending Iris West’s right to exist. 

The group was formed to fight against hate that Iris and her actress, Candice Patton, received online. Both fans and Candice herself have received a near constant litany of hate for her character. Most of it is racial.

They gained popularity, most notably when Orlando Jones reached out to them and asked to team up with Sleepyheads and help a trending event to Renew Sleepy Hollow.  In fact Iris West fans have been acknowledged and reached out to by several fandoms for trending worldwide nearly every week. The most successful run was 6 worldwide trends in 5 weeks. Since then they’ve been talking to members of other fandoms, scheduling trends with the explicit goal of uplifting and protecting black women on TV.

BGN claims that they are bullies, and not fans. They claim that don’t care about the quality of her character. Since BGN didn’t bother to ask them, I did.

“She’s the female lead, right? I want her to be treated the way a white leading lady would” - Anonymous

"I want her to have agency, a point of view and screentime. I want her have an active role in her own story and I want to see deep and meaningful moments.” - W.

 ”I want Iris to be a fully realized character. She should be allowed to have every human emotion, whether it be anger, jealousy,fear, happiness and even pettiness. I want her to have agency over her sexuality and not be demonized.” - Kerrigan

BGN’s claim that Iris fans are incapable of taking constructive criticism is the probably the boldest lie in her hit piece. There are at least 4 hashtags (#DoYouHaveADaughterJoe, #WeNeedToTalkAboutIris, #WhereIrisWest and #IrisWestDeservesBetter.) completely dedicated to criticizing inconsistent writing, the lack of Iris’ POV and the general fact the show doesn’t seem to know what to do with her. The people who are constantly critiquing Iris and her interactions with other characters are Iris West Fans. They want more for her.

BGN’S Motive.

By all accounts, the IWDS and BGN interacted one tuesday, last week. Yet for the last week, she’s been seeming baiting them, subtweeting hourly, and continuously retweeting  only those who agrees with her. Why is she so hell bent on painting the IWDS in a negative light?

BGN’s article was never mentioned or announced until hours after a member from IWDS announced that they’d be starting a podcast specifically about women of color on television.

This podcast would have 4 members of various fandoms: Empire, Scandal, Sleepy Hollow, The Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf, and yes, The Flash. From what we know, it’s a round table featuring all black women who will discuss plot lines, writing quality, erasure, and misogynoir towards characters.

I can’t help but wonder if BGN feels a threatened by a show that wants to uplift black women on TV while at the same time constructively criticizing the writing and overall quality, seeing as BGN is getting by solely on snarky tweets with no substance.

By all accounts, this podcast if successful would be everything BGN claims to represent, except this show would contain depth, and at it’s core it would uplift black women on television, something that BGN is seemingly incapable of doing. 

How can we trust BGN to support black women, when she’s trying to find a come up by tearing down and slandering black women in real life?

Misty x Danny rant

**SPOILERS**

I am so beyond pissed off these two haven’t interacted yet. Marvel has had not one but TWO opportunities to have them meet and yet, nothing. This isn’t a crack ship. Misty and Danny are an iconic comic book couple they are the loves of each other’s lives and so far the most we get is crumbs?? When everyone else has interacted? Has any other marvel show done this to a comic book pairing?? WHAT ARE THEY DOING?

First of all Misty should’ve been in Iron Fist s1. Instead of it being Claire/Danny/Colleen it should have been Misty. Misty should’ve been the one looking at Colleen’s poster at the end of Luke Cage. It made all the sense in the world for her to want to learn some more self defense after the trauma she suffered. It also grates my nerves not only bc of comic book canon, but because we learn on the Defenders that Misty’s been put on a city wide police force. MISTY COULD HAVE BEEN HELPING DANNY IN SEASON 1 OF IRON FIST. INVESTIGATING RAND ENTERPRISES. MISTY COULD’VE  BEEN TRAINING WITH COLLEEN. IT WRITES ITSELF. Not one appearance on the show. A mistake, but fine. 

So I get excited for the Defenders. Surely, with all of the characters interacting fo the first time we’ll see Danny and Misty meet. NOPE. I thought they would since other characters kept name dropping eo in front of them but NOPE. If Misty had been introduced in IF s1 like she should have, it would’ve been Misty introducing Danny and Luke.  What gets me is that there are two times Danny and Misty are in the same room and there’s no eye contact, no nothing. Defenders is full of moments for the fans but nothing for Danny and Misty?? NOTHING. Not a word, not a glance. 

Misty interacts with every single person BUT the character she has her main story line with. What the actual fuck?? Again if Misty was introduced in IF s1, she could’ve had more interactions with Colleen as friends. Essentially what Claire did.

 Now in the final ep I thought there would be a moment when Danny, Jessica, and Luke meet up with Colleen, Claire, and they’re carrying Misty. I thought Danny would ask “hey is she okay” or offer to carry her. Just a little bone to throw fans of the pairing. NOPE. There is no official meeting for Danny and Misty. What we do get is Danny putting Misty up in his hospital. Now, it’s his idea, and he does ask Colleen about her well-being but…why couldn’t Danny be waiting with Colleen when Misty woke up? Since it was his idea and he wanted her there? There’s a shit load of missed opportunities and I’m tired of waiting. I am tired of Colleen x Danny. It’s been established that “he is not for you” let it go. I’m asking for basic things. An introduction, a glance, anything! Give Misty and Danny their time to shine because their lack of screen time is starting to look suspect and down right ridiculous.

Wow even Fathoms Deep is saying it's all a plan.

I genuinely feel like I missed something. I’m not even being sarcastic. Why is this theory so rampant and dont even both answering of you’re a silver/Flint fanbitch but I need solid facts before I will consider it. I mean I can see Silver having a plan but Silver wouldn’t tell Hands its all a plan? I don’t want to hear about they raised their voices for two people that didn’t have anything to do with the storyline to hear as a reason. They yelled before. In the preview Silver clearly says “ If Flint buries that cache, he’ll win”

All Flint’s POV were private and had no purpose other than for the audience. Any man on that boat would have helped. Hell Silver has trusted men that respect him and Flint. The need for secrecy when the secret is out seems pointless? Everyone knew the treasure was going to WR and no one had a problem.

Now I don’t think Silver have a kill order.

And pictures are just that. No context.

So other than those three thing that are easily dismissed what makes people believe this shit? As far as Fathom Deep I have to remember they thought Madi was manipulating Eleanor in the house so mayyyybbbeee I shouldn’t try to giving them as much credit because they be wrong. It came from Daphnes lips and she has been missing in her analysis this season and Liz doesn’t speak nearly as much as she should.

I honestly don’t see why this is all a plan when Silver and Flint are going to turn on each other regardless. Like even IF everyone seriously thinks this is a plan or even PROVEN so it DOES NOT END WELL BETWEEN THEM.

IT’S HAPPENING WHETHER ITS THIS WEEK OR NEXT. THEY DON’T END THE SERIES FRIENDS.

Might as well mourn now. If it’s not the end yet it certainly is the beginning.

If anything everyone needs to be focused on why the hell Billy dragged everyone’s ass out here in the first place .

No offense, but why is anyone who is a Madi/ Silver fan listening to Fathoms Deep? They WANT Madi to die & Silver to marry Max as a business arrangement. I’ve had to check them several times on twitter because of how they dismiss Silver’s love of Madi. They were upset Silver chose to prioritize Madi and dig up the treasure. According to them, “Silver should let Madi be a bad ass woman and die for the cause” knowing the pirates lose so her death would be in vain. They are Silver Flint shippers at the end of the day. Oh bae after listening to the rest of that podcast I will NOT be going back. I never heard when they said Madi would die!!!! WTF!!!!! They used to praise the hell out of Madi and were big Madi/Silver fans but this season it’s like they did a 180 in any type of good analysis. Liz barely talks just agreez with everything Daphne says. I used to be a fan but it’s basically Daphne speaking, Liz going on sure without anything to add. I Hate podcasts that do that. It’s a discussion not a personal thesis. Plus they clearly need to re-watch a great deal more interviews. They keep saying Flint is for the big picture when the shows own actor admits he’s only in it for himself. He threatened to withhold the cache unless Billy gave him power over the resistance, he agreed to Eleanor’s terms to surrender the cache without the consent of Silver or explaining to him why. He’s been wielding that cache around & using it at he wishes for his own personal reasons more than anyone else. What Silver is doing now to save Madi, Flint has done before too. Silver is willing to kill Flint to ensure he has a future with the Madi, well so is Rackham for he and Anne’s future. You know who else is down with killing Flint for self preservation reasons, Max. So you all need to turn on just about every character on Black Sails, not just Silver. Any criticisms heaped on Silver for his decision can be applied to Flint’s ass too.

Amen and Amen. Spot on Black Sails commentary. I ain’t gonna lie, I love me some Captain Flint and his crazy ass but Silver and Madi are everything. And haters within the fandom are gonna hate every time the fine ass, blue eyed, white male lead falls in love with a black female lead/character and will sacrifice everything and move heaven and earth to be with her. I just have one “correction” - Flint’s motivation for his murdah spree in season three. While Thomas was an influence (obviously) it was given a springing into action by Miranda being killed before his eyes when they were in Charlestown/Charleston.

And just my opinion but the way I have compartmentalized the relationships we see in S4 as such - while Silver and Madi are the central love story - for me, Silver and Flint are still essentially the central relationship.

And yes it is way too simplistic to just brush Madi aside as merely a “plot device.” That said I do think she is the strongest of influencers in the direction that we are headed in.

What I have seen in season four is a convergence of all these people and events leading up to a point which in some way will align with both aspects of pirate history (I spot Anne and Max into this area) and the events which propel the TI) story.

There is a lot more I wanna write (this show to its credit gives us so much to unpack). Maybe I will add/edit later. But I wanted to get this down before I lose track of my spattering of disjointed thoughts.

PSA: Madi is not with Silver for his title. A title in which he didn't even have when they first met and let's not forget she held power of her own. She's not with Silver because it convenience her. She could have easily hooked up with any of the pirates if that was the case. Hell, she could have stayed to herself and still had the same position in the war.
