“Londo Mollari … is a mercurial personality given to extreme manifestations of anger, sadness, or joviality, depending on the power of the catalyst provoking them. While he is an avid hedonist who is fond of drink and leisure…” (Wikipedia: Londo Mollari, emphasis mine)
Seriously!? No wonder the treatment of the character perplexes me. I thought he was the model of gregarious self-restraint. Sure, he drank some and gambled and made love, but there’s no story of him being an addict (not really even when he had good reason to be), no indication he couldn’t pay his debts, and one sexual partner in five years is hardly the work of a libertine.
This is interesting. It seems like a kind of blur between what we are literally shown and what we are probably supposed to imagine.
He did not get an ‘addict’ story like Garibaldi and Franklin, but we see him drinking to solve a lot of of problems early on. He’s given that ‘wine, women, song’ password which doesn’t seem to surprise Adira. Speaking of, we didn’t see him with anyone but Adira, but he is an obviously frequent patron of B5′s strip club. Are we maybe supposed to infer that he ended up with Adira because he had a habit of taking random strippers home?
I have a feeling I’m going to think about this a lot.
