Chapter Five **TW blood + wounds**
Nathaniel blinked in the darkness, struggling to orient himself. The ground was cold and damp beneath his limbs. There were metal bars in front of him… He was still in the dungeon cell.
Whipping his head around, he looked up to find Andrew sitting pointedly a short distance away, his back against the wall and his expression guarded and faintly annoyed. Nathaniel’s breath caught as he quickly took stock of himself. His skull did not throb, there was no fresh ache along his shoulders or spine, no pain that suggested he had struck the stone floor when he went down.
“I caught you before you hit the ground,” Andrew said. “Seemed inconvenient to let a high lord crack his head open in my cell.”
Nathaniel pushed himself upright too quickly and had to brace a hand against the floor when the room swayed. “My apologies,” he said, breathless with embarrassment. “I don’t know what came over me.”
Nathaniel looked down at his hands, mortified of meeting Andrew’s confused looks and terrified of what was happening to himself. The spider web of dark veins were beginning to subside, but he still felt an intense hunger burning him to the core. Whatever Prince Riko had injected into him was lasting far longer than anything else ever had.
And that terrified Nathaniel even more.
He needed Jean- he wanted Jean right now.
“Those marks on your arms,” Andrew muttered quietly. Nathaniel looked up, surprised by the tone of his voice. The biting indifference was now replaced with… almost concern, perhaps? “How did you get those, Nathaniel?”
Nathaniel cleared his throat and tugged the sleeves of his jacket down to cover his arms. “They are nothing of consequence.”
Andrew reached out and took his wrist, the sudden contact making Nathaniel whimper as his skin felt like fire erupted across it. Andrew quickly softened his grasp so that he was barely touching him, but even that was almost unbearable. Shifting closer to him, Andrew stared down at the receding black veins on his skin. In the close proximity of the Druid’s body, Nathaniel realized just how cold he had become. Unthinkingly, he leaned closer towards him.
“These markings,” Andrew continued, not noticing his movement. “This is from… This is magic.”
Nathaniel closed his eyes, feeling drawn to Andrew’s touch, that raging hunger gnawing at him more viciously.
He needed to touch him again.
Surprised by the intensity of his thoughts, Nathaniel pulled away from him. He tried to stand, but stumbled sideways back onto his hands and knees. Andrew reached forward to brace him, but Nathaniel flinched involuntarily at his touch.
“Nathaniel,” Andrew said, as if trying to speak to a cornered animal. “You need to rest for a moment. I have never seen marks like those before- it could be dangerous.”
He looked at Nathaniel, confusion washing over him as he seemingly tried to piece together how a human lord, ward of the royal family, would have had contact with any type of magic, let alone dangerous magic.
“This is far from the worst of what I have experienced,” Nathaniel snarled, growing more desperate to get away from the elf. He didn’t at all like the pull he was feeling towards him.
Whatever it was, it felt dangerous indeed.
Nathaniel sat back on his heels, closing his eyes and trying to remember how to breathe. When he opened them again, Andrew hadn’t broken his gaze on him.
