“ rarely do such sufferings manage to do so. ” all the half-hearted talk about becoming someone who did good often skipped over the pains that one would have to endure, the constant mistakes that they would run into as they try and correct themselves. sometimes pain was just that — pain. nothing to be gained from it.

he levels the other with a stern look at the use of harsh language, but refrains from commenting on it, arms folding over his chest as he thinks for a moment. “ i believe certain events are preordained with good reason. ” hasebe hums, a short nod following suit. naturally, organic things must wither and die — it was their ultimate fate. entropy was but a guaranteed end that many will succumb to.

... or perhaps was the child speaking of fate that lay within choices? well, he believed in that too. choices were an illusion of will; both everything and nothing were definite. “ you have your opinion and i have mine. destiny wills you to be put in certain situations, but there’s a certain amount of control you can exert over yourself in regards to that... it’s not entirely a lie, but it’s not a truth either. ”

disappointment heavy in his glare, he shakes his head to dispel the thought, frown tugging at his lips. a gloved finger lifts to push a crooked book back into place, silent for a moment. simple respect between two of the same… that was all he had asked for! or was it because they had both been in the demon king’s grasp, and met similar fates? was the other looking down on him because he had been pawned off to someone less important than his former master?

perhaps hasebe was overthinking — but perhaps it was just as right that he wasn’t, and that his paranoia was only justified. perhaps there was an agenda against him after all. it would not be surprising, in any case. “ —— so be it, ” he says, tone clipped. “ i will refrain from such actions in the future. ”
