I was streaming on twitch last night, and my one loyal viewer started a conversation about moral dilemmas. I thought it was really interesting, and I would want to know what other people think.Β
There is a train, and there are two tracks it could go on. The one you are currently on has 3 people tied down on the tracks, but you can decide to pull a lever and switch the train to a different track that has one person tied to it. Do you pull the lever?
This is a pretty common hypothetical, and there are a bunch of variations, but this one is the most interesting one to me. The other variations have to do with like having your parents tied down, and personally I would always switch the tracks if it was my mom regardless of how many strangers were on the other one.Β
My roommate said she would switch the track. She followed the Utilitarian idea that the best option was the one where the most amount of people benefitted. It makes logical sense, and I can see her point of view. I, however, chose to no touch the lever. I kind of think along the lines of the Hippocratic Oath to do no harm. I saw it as either letting people die or actively killing someone, and I would rather let people die then kill people. Now it comes to a point where if you put a million people on the first track then yes I would kill someone to avoid a million deaths but you get my gist.
IDK I just thought it was a pretty interesting conversation.Β
