Documentary on “Resistance or the Vindication of a Collective Right”, a performance by the LASTESIS collective

The creation of the feminist collective from Valparaíso unfolded in two parts in Almada: firstly as a workshop for women and gender dissidents, and the second part was the presentation of a public performance in Praça da Liberdade. The performance combines feminist theory and activism with performative arts and music, exposing a scenario sustained by bodies, voices and the experience of the participants.

"The Spirit of Gayap" is a short documentary film that captures the essence of Gayap, showcasing the transformative power of community, innovation and resilience. This film tells the story of five communities that participated in the first-ever Gayap Toolkit Initiative, highlighting the importance of learning traditional and indigenous practices for sustainable solutions. The Fondes Amandes Community Reforestation Project (FACRP) is a beacon of sustainability within the Caribbean forests. FACRP partnered with The University of the West Indies, Institute for Gender and Development Studies (UWI-IGDS) for this Gayap Toolkit Initiative Project. This project was funded by the Natural Infrastructure for Caribbean Resilience (NICaR), an initiative of the United States Forest Service.

Session: Cultivating Peace – Where Inner Practice Meets Authentic Storytelling and Activism

As Caribbean peoples, we hold within us a legacy of deep understanding and connectivity to land, water, spirit, and the communities we inhabit. Through colonial violence and enduring colonial asymmetries, we have become and continue to be distanced from these inherent knowledges and lifeways. We find ourselves grappling with existences that do not uphold peaceful realities rooted in connection and symbiosis. Still, through the resilience and ingenuity of our ancestors, paths of survival and healing continue to be forged. Paths that lead us, again and again, to the very place we began, here, with ourselves. It is here that we converge now. It is here we must collectively move forward from.

In this workshop, over twenty emerging animators from St. Vincent and the Grenadines gathered together to explore what peace means to each other: how we cultivate peace within ourselves, and within our communities. We captured these personal narratives of peace-making and reflected on how we can imbue them into our creative work to shape shared futures rooted in memory and communal care.

This project was conceptualized by Arnaldo James and implemented by North Eleven Limited. The project was made possible through agreement with the University of the West Indies, UNESCO and CARICOM funded through the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) as part of the ACP Innovation Fund sponsored by the 11th European Union Development Fund.

Centering Decolonial Practice is a core pillar of the work that I engage in and cultivate. Being able to deliver these sessions, for me is an essential act, and a deep responsibility to the constant lived realities that we continue to face as practitioners navigating a still deeply flawed development and humanitarian landscape.

At our first public offering of @reelnjig we screened one of my favorite films of all time, Black Orpheus, a visceral, layered and lush masterpiece. If you love the weaving of stories across different art forms then this is definitely a space for you. For the next installation of reelnjig we will feature the film, Glory: Forbidden Love. This film explores the powerful allure of the unknown, the struggle between choosing duty and desire, and the heart's relentless pursuit of happiness. It is described as "a re-imagined story of traditional carnival characters". Rooted in the legacy of our ancestors this award-winning short film celebrates the artistry of Caribbean storytelling and cultural heritage. Beyond excited for our third episode on June 28th 2025!

Where are we going?

Global challenges such as climate change, social inequality, and sustainable development require cooperation – yet partnerships between the Global South and the Global North are often characterized by power imbalances and historical dependencies. How can we create genuine, equal partnerships based on respect, justice, and solidarity, instead of reinforcing old hierarchies? Together with three experts from Latin America and Germany, we want to explore these questions and discuss new paths for more equitable cooperation.
