I legit forgot why I fell in love with The Equalizer but this first episode reminded of exactly why. Not only is it thrilling, but there's so much heart and I love that in a show. I can't wait to see what happens next.
I've said it once and I'll say it again Mel and Harry are the best couple ever and here's why. He has a skill set that doesn't really include physical activity, but he still throw down if it meant protecting her. And Mel, she knows that his heart is his biggest strength and could easily be used against him, so she's protective of him. Mutual protection in a relationship is one of the most beautiful things on the planet. I love seeing that so much.
i can't believe how late i am to the equalizer on cbs. i love queen latifah, have always loved her, so this has been on my list for a while. but because i don't have cable tv, i always missed knowing about it and keeping up with it. so i finally got to it this weekend, and binged all three seasons. i'm overwhelmed! the writing! the pacing! the acting! the sensitivity to real issues despite the episodic formula to the show's production, and the seriousness with which the character's crazy circumstances actually are explored long term in meaningful ways! i even love the young daughter and her storyline and the seamless slow way they build up her plot over the course of the series, which is amazing because normally teens are written so poorly that i end up hating adult-centered shows with children featured prominently, but this show gets it right! i LOVE delilah so, so much. i love mel, i love harry, i love aunti vi. i love marcus. i LOVE ROBYN MCCALL. ahhhhhhhhh! i'm just mad i found this show so late!!!!!
Same I only discovered this show recently but I am literally obsessed I love all the characters and how their dynamics evolved throughout the show like so many shows will not keep up with all the characters personality and progress and mental state but this one does in a really amazing way and you can sense how much the writers care about the characters and their journey
McQ: Simon is an enormously, enormously, underrated dramatic actor.
Tom: Oh my god, he's brilliant.
McQ: He's incredible at genre storytelling.
Tom: And when you have Simon, and you've got Ethan, both of them feeling uncomfortable, they both know "what we're saying is outrageous".
McQ: I also feel the buddy relationship even though you're not in the same room. I feel the two of you are -
Tom: Yes, that's it. 'Cause I know how Simon's gonna act it. And I'm giving that and he's giving -
McQ: That's what's amazing. We shot that scene after but you are actually, your physicality, you are imbuing Simon.
Tom: And I know what he's - so as we're going through it you and I are talking and we know.

I love Tom saying how he knew to match Simon's acting even though they shot these scenes separately!
Guess who couldn’t resist the urge to talk Trafalgar Square.
The first time - that swooping shot down from Nelson (the hero who died at the moment of his greatest victory, in his loving comrade’s arms, his last words ‘kiss me, hardy) down to Ethan coming out of the tube. Protesters, soldiers, Ethan slipping unseen between them, searching for Benji, worried and tense. And Benji there, automatically coming into a hug.
The second time - I did a diagram.
Ethan again out of the Tube and into the square, to find a busy, bustling place.
Degas arrives, Paris arrives, and they’re on the same side of the square. Apart, but on the same side…they started as enemies. Now they’re friends.
And it’s Paris who spots Benji - emphasising that closeness they have
And then Benji - lit by the golden light of the chicken van, which as @waywardmillennial has already pointed out

is the same colour light as the trapped entity.
This time Benji doesn’t rush to Ethan. He waits. He’s waiting for Ethan to make his choice.
And then Grace who unlike everyone else is not static. She walks on, striding across the square, from a completely different place to everyone else - she came from outside their world. Then she hands the Entity over to Ethan - the mission is done. It’s over.
The way she saw Ethan - glowing, mystical, mythological - is over, symbolised by handing over the Entity (which is hugely reminiscent of the alleged soul of Marcellus in Pulp Fiction) . He looks once, and closes the box, hiding Grace’s lovelight. Then she walks away, toward Paris and Degas.
The others are waiting, deciding, still thinking what to do. Only Grace has made her choice. She has no need to linger. She has her purpose now. She walks away from Ethan towards Degas and Paris.
Ethan nods at Paris - it’s fairly clear he’s thanking her for saving Benji’s life.
Benji walks away too. It’s over. The mission has finished. A mission that one way or another has been going on since MI3. Now the choice is Ethan’s and Benji is leaving him to make that choice. He walks away, past the lions, past Nelson.
And you can see Ethan weighing up his choices. Making his decision. And his decision is follow Benji.
Every step and movement in that square is carefully choreographed to signal their intentions and their journey and the choices they have made. Nothing there is by accident and we can read the story of who they’ve become despite the entire lack of dialogue on this scene. We don’t need dialogue. We can read everything in the careful placing of the characters.
Something I found extremely funny was that at the first fifteen or something minutes into the movie two agents intercept Ethan at a party and lo and behold, Matthew Keller is there!
