I care about you, Asami. More than Iâve ever cared about anyone. If anything ever happens to youâŠ
i have nothing against zukka or bakoda as relationships but a lot of yâall need to examine why youâre so obsessed w two male characters who had like. 1 solid episode together while completely brushing aside the multiple canon queer women and their relationships
"I don't mind gay characters as long as they're well written,"
And why this mindset is not as progressive as you think it is. Weâll break this down into three simple points.
1. It places a double standard on gay characters. Gay characters have to justify their existence. When a male character shows interest in a woman despite never having shown any before, itâs not questioned. Itâs accepted as the default â which is another form of homophobia on its own. When the same happens to a same-sex interest, itâs accused of coming out of nowhere. Itâs viewed as a straight person being turned gay, never mind the existence of bisexual people. A non-straight sexuality or identity is treated as a new development that needs foreshadowing and explaining rather than a trait as inherent as eye color.
2. Itâs never their entire personality. Another way this mindset is taken is that a gay characterâs personality would be centered on their sexuality. Weâll ignore the fact that actual examples of this are few and far between (and usually pointed out by straight people who canât handle seeing any kind of queer content). Similar to the previous point, this kind of complaint only exists for LGBT content. Take a look at mainstream media and count how many male characters there are that have their conflict and goals centered around getting laid. Count how many female characters there are that have their arc propelled by male attention. These instances are rarely complained about, at least not to the extent that queer ones are. For us, critics have a knee-jerk reaction.
3. Who gets to decide what a âgood gayâ character is? Hint: itâs not the people being represented. When you push someone to explain what the mythical Good Gay is, you get phrases like âItâs not done for panderingâ and âforcedâ and âshoved down your throat.â So a character needs more than just their sexuality going for them, that seems reasonable, but oh wait weâre not done. When a gay character isnât overt, their sexuality is denied. Itâs explained away and called unnecessary. âWhy make them gay if itâs not relevant to the plot?â
This is a double edged sword with no balance. Homophobes want good gay characters that wonât make them uncomfortable, which are none at all. Sometimes the smarter ones will have a token gay character or two they can point to and claim they like as if it absolves them of any possible bias. And many arenât aware of their bias at all, which makes this conversation immensely tedious.
At best, claiming you donât mind well written gays is ignorant. At worst, itâs a dog whistle. If you want to be an ally, say you donât mind gay characters and relationships at all â yes, even the badly written ones. We are just as deserving of representation and the leniency that cishet media gets.

Any minor inconvenience in my life: happens
Me and my sensitive ass:
Although Reid makes it personal, thereâs still an important message here that shows Dr. Reid knows whatâs up re: schizophrenia and violence
Fun fact: schizophrenics are literally less likely to commit an act of violence than someone who doesnât experience mental illness.
We are however significantly more likely to be victims of abuse, addiction, poverty, and suicide.
Schizophrenics donât need the media constantly telling people weâre a time bomb. We need help and patience. And hugs. And maybe some ice cream.
Reblogging because the âfun factâ is both true and important for everyone to know.
This goes for everyone will mental health problems.
Theyâre more likely to be victims than perpetrators
But the media doesnât like that because thatâll take the âcrazyâ and put it on them
âYou have indeed felt a great loss, but love is a form of energy, and it swirls around us.  The Air Nomadsâ Aangâs love for you has not left this world.  It is still inside of your heart, and is reborn in the form of new love.â
The announcement of the upcoming graphic novel brought up all sorts of old feels, so in commemoration of the continuing story, I decided to break my own heart. Â Enjoy.
