“My boss is practically begging me to take a vacation so whenever you want.”

“Well, Wanna head out Monday?  And how long as  we going to stay?”

“But he didn’t want to try, go figure. When do you want to go?”

“Yeah, I know. Whenever you do. I’m of for summer, so I’ve got time.”

“I’m a big girl. I can be alone. Besides, I have to be here to tamper wiht my brother’s love life.”

“Which one?”

“I just remember big, strong arms and a deep voice whispering in spanish… and smelling like cigars. I also remember him and mom fighting.”

“That sounds like dad. He and mom fought a lot. Dad smoking didn’t help.  Mom would get so mad about him  smoking or  smelling like it around us. He...could have been a good man if he tried.”

“I don’t want to leave  you here,”  he said and then ran a hand over his head, “I promise to not kill  anyone. Honestly,  I don’t know if I’m  promising you or me.”

“I don’t even remember him.”

“You were really  little when he dipped out. I wouldn’t...expect you to. Mom said  we can stay at his place, but I’ll get us a hotel if you want.”
