Toni Morrisonâs âA Nobel Lectureâ was so insightful when speaking on the lesson of the bird as a symbol for much more. "I don't know", she says. "I don't know whether the bird you are holding is dead or alive, but what I do know is that it is in your hands. It is in your hands." Her answer can be taken to mean: if it is dead, you have either found it that way or you have killed it. If it is alive, you can still kill it. Whether it is to stay alive, it is your decision. Whatever the case, it is your responsibility.
This lesson of responsibility across the board is seen throughout the speech. I find it quite interesting that just because the old woman is blind that she still finds a way to see the bird as two symbols. âI relied more on touch and sound to figure out what it was that I was holding or potentially watching,â said the woman. Her character in the story speaks heavily on the mistakes or flaws of society -- much like a satire.
