OKAY so I've only ever come across one other person who's had the first same impression as me on this, so im sorry if I got this wrong - but from how SJM describes the bat boys (brown/golden skin, dark STRAIGHT hair, living in a more northern colder climate) I've always imagined that the Illryans were more close to Native Americans in inspiration.
