i introduce you TO HUMAN LORD SHEN!!1!
early designs under the cut
Something about Scrooge being guilty for āstealingā Goldieās fresh start, and still being visibly upset after she reassures him.
Transcript:
Scrooge: ābut, your fresh start.ā
Goldie: āoh, a fresh start isnāt worth it without you. You crazy old coot.ā
Itās morning now so I can make a coherent conversation of this.
Scrooge has continuously shown throughout every episode that includes Goldie that she makes him nervous, that he cares for her deeply, and that heās willing to put her before himself even if it hurts. I really like this episode because itās suppose to be Goldieās āredemptionā episode in a way, I think itās the last time we get an episode centered around these two (correct me if Iām wrong), but itās not framed how redemption episodes typically are, theyāre not having a montage of every good thing Goldie does for Scrooge in it, the episode follows the same pace and formula as any other part of the show, itās a natural progression of their dynamic given the circumstances.
I think Goldie and Scrooge fall into the category of person that believes their life has been slipping through their fingers faster than they can catch it, (and theyāre immortal!) So being given this opportunity of a fresh start, to be young again and avoid making the same mistakes over again, itās very appealing. Itās why, even though Scrooge denies eternal youth, stating heās proud of his age, he still panics a little at being drowned in the aging poolāwhich also has to do with being drowned but I digress.
Goldie is shown continuously to have trouble deciding between saving herself and a loved one (see Happy Birthday Doofus Drake!) but she always picks the loved one, she does the right thing, but even after this whole episode of Scrooge and Goldie bonding, the writers feel itās important to mention āhey this was a hard decision for her.ā Which I appreciate. She definitely has a lot of character development, but she is still Goldie OāGilt.
And even though Scrooge wouldāve died if Goldie hadnāt gone down and got him from the pool, heās still guilty that she lost her chance at that fresh start theyād been dreaming about. Because he knows that shit was hard for her, he knows she wouldāve loved to live her glory days again, but she chose him instead, which is something that does not happen often if at all. In The Golden Lagoon of White Agony Plains, Scrooge and Goldie have an exchange that tells us that Goldie always expects Scrooge to follow her even if he was trapped in an ice block, so Iām guessing this outward level of care isnāt something Scrooge has seen since they were actually young.
Weāve seen how Goldie has changed after meeting Louie, whom she has put her neck out for a couple of times now, but this is Scrooge seeing that for the first time, heās so use to her leaving him and just arguing about it later, that this is completely foreign. Like, āshit, this woman Iāve been fighting with our entire lives just showed up for me and lost a chance she really wanted because my life was more important to her, I feel bad.ā
my first reaction to seeing jack stumbling thru the woods bleeding to death was "somebody help him!!!" then i realized he is the guy that helps.
imagine (the hallucination of) your past self not even recognizing you and thinking you're some homeless guy in need of help

i thought about what he would look like in between seasons 4 and 5

Naturally there's a vast well of potential metaphors that apply here, superimposed on each other and difficult to isolate, but I've been enjoying the interpretation that Mirror Sheriff posed last episode: MT is not a main character and therefore does not get an arc or growth.
Through that lens, this book is a story about stories. The traditional narrative structure would have us believe ALL obstacles are there for conflict, ALL characters exist for a reason, and the story ends when something is learned or changed.
within this framework, MT is the Very Special Episode Guest Character, who exists to act out a marginalized story for the sake of the characters who get their names in the credits, leaving behind nothing but William Shatner idly speculating "but what of Lazarus?" as we pan to an exterior shot and the credits roll.
MT rejects that role. Obstacles and foils aren't there FOR you. Narrative utility is a useful myth. Stories don't end when a comfortable status quo is attained; they continue with a different lead.

romantic relationships blah blah blah okay but what about risking everything for your sibling. what about the unwavering love and care that can only come from a parent to a child. what about someone who just wants their best friend back. ever thought of that.
"there's no platonic explanation for this" WRONG my characters are staving off the heat death of the universe through the power of friendship
he's SO normal guys, trustšš»
