“Ribbons are red, and some are blue. I need all the horses, but I don’t need you.”
Again, how NOT to react when your horse stops. Beating it will not make it jump from a stand still. If you want to give it one smack, fine. Circle and try again. This repetitive beating shown here is useless, especially when you’re leaning at the horse in front of the jump.
*Asks for the long spot with 0 support* *horse says no bueno* Must be horse’s fault
That stop was on Gia. This reaction was unacceptable. It wasn’t a dirty stop. She didn’t support him, went to throw her body at him and he said no. The horse did his job, and a kid at her level should know better. You can’t loose your temper like that. I get that she’s young but this isn’t acceptable.
I don’t know nothing about h/j but that reaction is entirely unacceptable for every level of riding
It was three smacks, exactly what the rule book says is acceptable. Like three smacks being the saddle is hardly abusive???? If she bloody went and smacked his face then yeah, but this is literally exactly what the rule book says is okay
“The rule book says it’s okay.”
The horse is frantically running backwards after a non-continget beating. Nice.
If she was my student she would not be allowed to touch a whip for an extended period of time and would have immediately been pulled from the horse for the rest of the day. Probably the week, honestly. The horse did nothing wrong, this type of reaction is beyond unacceptable.
Just because the rules say it’s legal doesn’t necessarily mean it’s okay.
If this was the 2nd time the horse stopped at this fence and the first time it was really dirty then yea a good smacking would be acceptable yet he didn’t do a dirty stop and was her fault Bc he didn’t wanna jump from that spot over a Fence that high.
“a good smacking” is NEVER acceptable. If it was the horses second time stopping at a fence, there are issues with the horse’s and/or rider’s confidence or position. Punishment isn’t going to solve those issues. Also to a horse, a refusal is a refusal. I don’t think that horses can differentiate between a dirty stop and a not-dirty stop.
“When a jumping horse refuses an obstacle, is is not uncommon for trainers to use the whip as the horse stands motionless in front of the obstacle after its refusal. Punishment at that point is non-contingent and, therefore, devoid of any useful training effect. In some cases, the refusing horse is punished and then turned away from for another presentation. When horses do attempt an obstacle after a random act of punishment, it is likely that increased anxiety levels make the horse run and, if the obstacle is in its path, it may well jump over it. At best, this is a haphazard training exercise, destined to have low, if any, efficiency. At worst, it simplify trains the horse to default to a flight response in the presence of jumps.” — Paul McGreevy & Andrew Mclean ~ Equitation Science
^^ Even contingent punishment isn’t proven to have a reliable effect on training. The way this was handled was completely inappropriate. And she’s lucky that her poor horse tolerated it. If I were to smack Nuno that hard even once, I’d be on the ground for it regardless of the situation.
^ yeah, Arnie would have lost it. Not sure if ‘lucky’ is the right word, she could probably do with dumping tbh
yikes, hitting a horse because of a refusal is unacceptable. i would have my crop and horse taken away if i ever reacted like this. thats no bueno
i don’t know the horse or why there was the stop so i won’t comment on weather or not smacking would be appropriate for the stop, i really am more opposed to how she yanks on the things mouth while smacking.. however, i would be very embarrassed if a student/client/rider of mine reacted this way in the show ring.. the show ring is not the place for discipline like this, ever.. you walk out of the ring and deal with the issue in the warm up ring or back home..

ELBOWS
started from your horse lying down and the edge of their horse shoe hitting the corner of their elbow developed over time can become inflamed and irritated while riding -horse appears to be lame -the inflamed lump can hit the girth causing it to get worse prevention -unfortunately once the capped elbow is there, its there -yet it should never be swollen and be the size of your fist -to prevent swelling use a “donut” or “shoe boil boot” -basically looks like a black giant donut -leave on in stall at ALL TIMES -do not give your horse nighttime turn out if the elbow is the size of a fist and it swollen -call vet (no shitt) get it drained then injected -let your horse sit a day in their stall -next day have them get a light turn out -then start riding possibly using a shoulder relief girth or a thin leather girth
sorry the photos are so big… also in the first picture the real donut is like three times the size of that (link above)
anyway this is BZ’s most recent thing she has going on… so basically she’s always had a caped elbow and one day it got really really big like the size of a softball… she looked and felt very off so we had our vet come check it out. She gave me a creme to take the swelling away it did absolutely nothing so if this happens down freak out. the next step was just to drain it and inject it and get a donut .. all links are there by the way. After she was set and ready to go (so we thought) we realized her now unshelled elbow cap was slightly hitting her regular fluffy schooling girth. My trainer suggested to first try my leather girth and push my saddle a little further back and it worked for her. Other horses though may need a shoulder relief girth (link is above). Also another thing to add… after your horse is set and ready to go do not let them have turn out at night because you can’t use the donut at night for safely reasons and your horse may feel the need to lay down to sleep (like bz) and cause it to re-swell and cause the vet another trip to your barn to drain it again….
So at the end of her show season the vet either wanted to get a surgery on the elbow or inject the elbow with depo. Depo for some reason has been known to keep the capped elbow from filling with fluid after it has been drained. We obviously tried this before the surgery and it worked. The last time BZ had her elbow injected with the depo was august and it is now January with no sign of a swollen elbow
