And Maudience, you know what they did? They danced 💠
My contribution to 100 Fanworks challenge: 2026 by @dustpileofherown 🩵!
The winter she went to dancing-school. Uncle James had decreed she should go and had paid for her lessons. How she had looked forward to it! [...] Valancy was a good dancer, as light on her feet as thistledown.
[someone hear me; someone record me TBC:Musical because I'm starving here...]
TBC musical once more but this time there are some very old and very grainy pics ✨
Ballet dancers (unknown man and cracovian primaballerina Alina Towarnicka) while (I guess) opening sequence. Whole play opens up with the ball in the Blue Castle.
Valarney dance in Chidley Corners. Antonina Malarz as Valancy, Jan Wilga as Barney.
Christmas with sparklers <3 Anna Grzeszczak as Valancy, Bogdan Juszczyk as Barney.
And sometimes he and Roaring Abel smoked fiercely the whole evening and never said a word, while Cissy lay in the hammock swung between the verandah posts and Valancy sat idly on the steps, her hands clasped over her knees, and wondered dreamily if she were really Valancy Stirling and if it were only three weeks since she had left the ugly old house on Elm Street.
🏰HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY TO THE BLUE CASTLE!
For the 100th birthday of one of my favorite books, I commissioned @sparemoon to do an art piece of Valancy, Barney, Cissy, and Roaring Abel. There were certain elements from the book that I wanted in the piece, and @sparemoon combined them all so skillfully and with the beauty and wonder that the book evokes, I could cry looking at this. I'm particularly thrilled that we now have art with Cissy and Roaring Abel, and more of Valancy and Barney.
The Blue Castle may sometimes be an overlooked little book, but it certainly now has a @dustpileofherown thanks to the fandom we've found here. 🩵
Working on creating a moonlight dress from a thrifted garment.
Happy Monday!
Now that Blue Castle Book Club is over we are excited to announce TWO upcoming fan challenges:
Fic challenge: @mollywog has set up a collection on Ao3. During the month of August interested authors can upload to the collection here. Deadline to submit is August 31st, 11pm, eastern time. Fics will become visible on Sept 1 and remain anonymous for 2 weeks. Read, comment, and try to guess who wrote each! Names will be revealed on Sept 14th.
100 Fanworks challenge: 2026 is the 100th anniversary of The Blue Castle and we want to see if we can get 100 new* fanworks! Send works or links to works via the ask box on this blog ( @dustpileofherown ).
(All fics submitted to the fic challenge automatically count towards the 100 count.)
We only have two “rules”:
Please no ai. Look we aren’t gonna enforce this but just don’t be a dick. It’s literally fandom - why feed that to AI? (I’ve never seen this community use ai for fanworks so this almost didn’t have to be said.)
*Fanwork must be newly shared to tumblr/ao3 in calendar year 2026. New additions to previously shared works DO count as well (ex: publishing an update to an old fic). You can also post something you made years ago but have never shared before with the Maudience. Please repost things you shared earlier this year too! We were not keeping count during book club.
What counts as fanwork? Almost anything! A playlist, a painting, a craft, a fic, a photo of a billboard that reminded you of the book, a recipe collection, a sewing project, etc.
Thanks for celebrating the CENTURY anniversary with us!!!! We can’t wait to see what you make!
CHAPTER 40-45 THOUGHTS🩵😭🩵
40:
This was not the saucy, impudent thing who had laughed at them in this very room last summer. This was a grey-faced woman with the eyes of a creature who had been stricken by a mortal blow.
MY BABY 😭😭😭
The plain truth was that, by this time, Mrs. Frederick did not want Valancy to come back—did not want ever to see or hear of her again.
AMELIA, JUST--!!! MOUTH.
Uncle Benjamin's mouth fell open and stayed open.(4)
4: In the published version, this sentence reads "Uncle Benjamin made a queer sound."
Both versions are great XDD
“You heard Doss say he was John Foster. I’m not up in literature myself, but I heard Mr. Stalling ^a lecturer from Toronto^ say that John Foster’s books had put Canada on the literary map of the world.”
No more Stalling for me, please xd
Bless me, I must get in the habit of calling her Miranda Valancy. She never liked Doss ^isn’t^ a baby any longer.
...a win is a win, a win is a win, thank you Uncle B. XD
41:
The camp-fires—Barney frying bacon—all their little household jokes and phrases and catch words—their furry beautiful cats—the lights agleam on the fairy islands—canoes skimming over Mistawis in the magic of morning—white birches shining among the dark spruces like beautiful women’s bodies—winter snows and rose-red sunset fires—lakes drunken with moonshine—all the delights of her lost paradise.
😭🩵
She recalled all his friendly looks and quips and jests —his little compliments—his caresses. She counted them all over as a woman might count her jewels—not one did she miss from the first day they had met. These memories were all she could have now.
VALANCYYY😭😭😭
Ethel would never make strawberry jam or dance to old Abel’s fiddle or fry bacon for Barney over a camp-fire.
B-but Maud, you cut off from manuscript parts about strawberry jam and bacon over camp-fire in published version ☝️
42:
It was not until early afternoon the next day that a dreadful old car clanked up Elm Street and stopped in front of the brick house. A man hatless man in overalls sprang from it and rushed up the steps.
Of course, timeless overalls xdd 🫶
Love you! Oh, don’t I love you! My girl, when I saw that train coming down on you I knew whether I loved you or not!
😭🩵
Of course he would pretend he did not want his freedom—she might have known he would pretend that, once the first shock of realisation was over. He was so sorry for her—he understood her terrible position. When had he ever failed to understand? But she would never accept his sacrifice. Never!
Forget about Barney for a sec – that can be exactly what was going through head of poor Cissy Gay, when she spoke with her lover about their child <///3
He and Mother lived in a little village up in Quebec and were abominably poor. I don’t remember Mother. Haven’t even a picture of her. She died when I was two years old. She was fifteen years younger than Father —a little school teacher.
😭😭
And he added a gratuitous thrust. ‘You know, Redfern, there are some things money won’t buy. For instance—it won’t buy you a grandfather.’
What's the deal with Barney's grandparents, Maud tell me!!
For five years I knocked about the world—in all sorts of outlandish places. I earned enough to live on —I wouldn’t touch a cent of Dad’s money. Then one day I woke up to the fact that I no longer cared a hang about Ethel, one way or another. She was somebody I’d known in another world—that was all.
If Barney needed five years to get over Ethel... I don't want to know how he would react if Valancy really dropped dead at the switch ☠️
(to be fair, not true, if someone would like to write fanfick like that I'd suck it up 🫶)
Then—I found you the best and jolliest and dearest little pal and chum a fellow ever had. Witty— loyal—sweet. You made me believe again in the reality of friendship and love. The world seemed good again just because you were in it, honey. I’d have been willing to go on forever just as we were. I knew that, the night I came home and saw my homelight shining out from the island for the first time. And knew you were there waiting for me. After being homeless all my life it was beautiful to have a home. To come home hungry at night and know there was a good supper and a cheery fire—and you.
😭😭🩵
Now I had to face it— you were under sentence of death and I couldn’t live without you.
😭😭😭🫶
“You couldn’t love me—me.”
She stood up and pointed tragically to the mirror over the mantel. Certainly, not even Allan Tierney could have seen beauty in the woeful, haggard little face reflected there.
Barney didn’t look at the mirror.
He always looked right at her 😭🩵
“Love you! Girl, you’re in the very core of my heart. I hold you there like a jewel. Didn’t I promise you I’d never tell you a lie? Love you! I love you with all there is of me to love. Heart, soul, brain. Every fibre of body and spirit thrilling to the sweetness of you. There’s nobody in the world for me but you, Valancy.”
😭😭😭😭🩵
“You darling!” she said. “You do mean it! You do really love me! You wouldn’t be so enraged if you didn’t. Everything is all right”
Indeed, everything is finally all right 😭🫶🩵
43:
I want you to see the Alhambra—it’s the nearest thing to the Blue Castle of your dreams I can think of. And there’s an old-world garden in Italy where I want to show you the moon rising over Rome through the dark cypress-trees.
["A Whole New World" from Aladdin playing in the background] 🫶
You know nothing of the beauty of the world. We’ll climb mountains—hunt for treasures in the bazaars of Somar Samarcand—search out the magic of east and west—run hand in hand to the rim of the world.
“You sound like John Foster
NOOO, Maud, let her tease him after all this time, let Valancy have her laugh of him xddd
44:
To hear Aunt Amelia talking of ‘my son-in-law, Bernard Redfern’ and ‘my daughter, Mrs. Bernard Redfern.’ Mother and Father are as bad as the rest. And they can’t see that Valancy is just laughing at them all in her sleeve.
At least Olivia see that Valancy is over her family's opinion at this point xD Pity that all of the other people don't see that.
45:
Valancy smiled through her tears. She was so happy that her happiness terrified her.
She came all the way from being afraid of crying, due to red eyes and nosy questions, to being full of happy tears... My girl 🩵🩵🩵
She knew perfectly well that no spot or place or home in the world could ever possess the sorcery of her Blue Castle.
THE END
AND THE BOOK IS OVER.
AAAAAAA
I love this story. Love this characters. And love this book club 🩵🩵🩵
IT. WAS. WONDERFUL 🫶
CHAPTERS 31-39 THOUGHTS🩵🔥
31:
“Warm fire—books—comfort— safety from storm—our cats on the rug. Moonlight,” said Barney, “would you be any happier you had a million dollars?”
Nothing better than good books and peace🔥
“Good Lord, do you learn all that fellow’s books by heart?” was Barney’s disgusted reaction as he strode off.
“John Foster’s books were all that saved my soul alive the past five years,” averred Valancy.
I'd love to have any reaction from Barney to this confession: what was going through his head when he heard that his writing saved someone's soul? Even not some ordinary "someone's" but his fellow companion!
And at the end was her dear little house, on the island of pines, with a coating of snow on its roof, sparkling in the moonlight. Its windows glinted impishly at her in the stray gleams.
“Looks exactly like a Christmas card(16), doesn’t it?” said Barney.
16: In the published version "Christmas card" is changed to "picture-book".
Why???
To her delight, Barney gave her a necklace of pearl beads. Valancy had wanted a string of milky pearl beads—like congealed moonshine —all her life. And these were so pretty.
Pearls are so pretty and classy, I'd also to own one day a string of those 🩵🩵🩵
32:
They talked about everything in this world and a good many things in other worlds. They laughed over their own jokes until the Blue Castles reechoed.
“You do laugh beautifully,” Barney told her once. “It makes me want to laugh just to hear you laugh. There’s a trick about your laugh—as if there were so much more fun back of it that you wouldn’t let out. Did you laugh like that before you came to Mistawis, Moonlight?”
“I never laughed at all—really. I used to giggle foolishly when I felt I was expected to. But now—the laugh just comes.”
I love them SO MUCHHHH🩵
When—I saw you—come round the point—there—something happened to me. I don’t know what. It was as if I had died and come back to life. I can’t describe it any other way.
She's to good to this world, such delicate soul 🩵🩵🩵
33:
At her old home Valancy, seized with a sudden impulse, got out, opened the little gate and tiptoed around to the sitting-room window. There sat her mother and Cousin Stickles drearily, grimly knitting. Baffling and inhuman as ever. If they had looked the least bit lonesome Valancy would have gone in. But they did not. Valancy would not disturb them for worlds.
Let them have their moment in peace...
34:
You remember your face as it was in the days when your soul was not allowed to shine through it.
Soul shining through face... Magical concept 🩵
“You nice little thing,” said Barney suddenly. “Oh, you nice little thing! Sometimes I feel you’re too nice to be real—that I’m just dreaming you.”
Oh Barney, you really love her!
35:
Thirty seconds can be very long sometimes. Long enough to work a miracle or a revolution. In thirty seconds life changed wholly for Barney and Valancy Snaith.
HERE COMES THE TRAIN 🚂💨💨💨
The heel of her pretty, foolish shoe caught in a crevice of the switch. She could not pull it loose.
CINDERELLA!GRIMMS MOMENT👠
“Barney—go—go—for God’s sake—go!”
“Never!” muttered Barney between his set teeth.
BARNEY LOCK INNNNN
As the train thundered around the curve he sprang up and caught Valancy —dragging her clear, leaving the shoe behind her. The wind from the train as it swept by turned to icy cold the streaming perspiration on his face.
“Thank God!” he breathed.
There we go, our Prince of the Blue Castle saving his Valancy, uffff 🩵
36:
She pretended to be asleep when Barney came in. Barney pretended to go to sleep. But Miranda Valancy knew perfectly well he was not ^wasn’t^ sleeping ^any more than she was.^ He was to quiet for that. When Barney was really asleep he sighed and squirmed and tossed and muttered ^through his teeth^ an occasional word now and then. She knew he was lying there, staring through the darkness.
So Barney was suppose to be tossing sleeper... So am I, bro!🩵
37:
“You told me, in your letter,” she said slowly, with a curious feeling that some one else was talking through her lips, “that I had angina pectoris—in the last stages —complicated with an aneurism. That I might die any minute—that I couldn’t live longer than a year.”
Dr. Trent stared at her.
“Impossible!” he said blankly. “I couldn’t have told you that!”
DOOM DOOM DOOOOOM 💥
This is the letter I meant for old Miss Jane Sterling. From Port Lawrence.
Poor Miss Sterling </3
38:
Redfern! A vision of bottles seemed to dance before Valancy’s eyes—long bottles of bitters— round bottles of hair tonic—square bottles of liniment—short, corpulent little bottles of purple pills— and all of them bearing that very prosperous, beaming moon-face and steel-rimmed spectacles on the label.
Valancy was hit by war flashbacks
Cats, eh? Puss, puss! See that. Cats love me. Bernie was always fond of cats! It’s about the only thing he took from me.
You sure? Cuz...
Well, well, I like your face. No beauty— you don’t mind my saying that— you’ve sense enough to know it, I reckon.
...yeah x.x Like father, like son
“Prettiest girl in Montreal,” said Dr. Redfern. “Oh, she was a looker, all right. Eh? Gold hair— shiny as silk—great, big, soft, black eyes—skin like milk and roses. Don’t wonder Bernie fell for her.
Sooo... Olive?
His address was given as ^Box 444^, Port Lawrence, Muskoka, Ont. First I thought I’d write. Then I had pneumonia and mighty near passed out thought I’d wait till car seas the open season for cars and come down myself
NOOO, DOC PLEASE DON'T DIE
39:
But she could not keep the fifteen thousand dollar gift of a man who had married her out of pity and whom she was now leaving.
Valancy THINK: WOULD HE gift 15k dollar necklace to someone, who he does not like???
CHAPTERS 19-30 THOUGHTS 🩵🔥

The (Happy) End
finished book cover :)
Another day, another AI generated The Blue Castle crap x.x
[amazon]
Sadly, this time there are no illustrations in free sample [*] So I can only judge lose, non-rendered arm of Valanccy, crocked bow tie, uneven buttions... And this Barney looking like twinkified version of a guy from Corpse Bride...
And if you're not fully convinced this is AI: fair. I also needed to just look at this for some time. And research ""illustrator"".
[post on IG]
Yeah. So AI-rtist. There is a recording of showing illustration from another book from this "classics series". Not very... looking like whatever.
...new TBC edition with art made by human, am I asking for too much?

MY BABIES, QUICK BARNEY!!
I'll catch up on book club for sure but I was a little busy in the last few days...
Welcome to Canada? Welcome to Canada, dear me!
I was literally feeling like this when I (almost) flawlessly passed security check (my pillow was sucked by a machine and I needed to ask someone for help with it ;-;):
(too niche to crossover Detroit: Become Human with Maudience??)
PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, I'M COMING

YES AND I'M LIKE AGSOXVSIANATSUWKAV!!
(maybe a little egotop to mark myself but who cares, it's my conference program, I can do whatever I want with it🩵🩵)
And it's double funny, because (shockingly): I never dreamed about travelling to PEI. I'm sacred of height. I have motion sickness. It's some gazillions miles from home. And so pricy... But they wanted my paper so here I am! Thankful and ready!
